[ad_1]

Whether you’re hoping to make some big gold or vying your way into the Thieves Guild, stealing does have its uses in Elder Scrolls OnlineIt is possible. But, your skill and ability to pickpocket your target will be key to making big bucks. Here’s a guide to getting your ill gotten gains specially if you’re new to thieving in ESO.

ESO Sneak Guide: A Beginner’s Guide to Thieving

Successfully stealing treasures can be a little daunting for newer players or those who haven’t tried pickpocketing in ESO before. If you’re looking to to choose the life of crime here are some skills, potions and tips that can make the experience a little smoother.

You can steal ESO items in three ways:

  • NPCs unaware of pickingpocketing
  • Stealing from closets, night stands or chests of drawers. No one is watching.
  • Safe boxes with lockable pick locks

Notice: A bounty will be given to anyone who catches you engaging in any of these activities. You will be asked to pay or run away if you are caught by a guard. If you are caught by a guard, you can either pay or be killed. You’ll lose all your items.

Stolen items are marked with the red hand symbol. If caught by guards, you’ll forfeit them.

How to pickpocket

  • In order to pickpocket you will need to first crouch by pressing R3 (if you’re on console).
  • Now, get closer to your target.
  • The stealth signal, also known as the eye, is something you need to watch out for. Closed eyes indicate that you have been completely stolen and are therefore the best time to stealthily commit any devious acts. You can still do devious acts with a semi-closed closed eye, however it is less likely that you will be discovered by witnesses.

A semi-closed eye means that there is a witness nearby.

  • You will have the greatest chance of securing your treasures if you wait for the pickpocket percentage to rise as much as possible. This can be done by playing a ding sound effect and turning green.

Green is a sign of a greater pickpocket success. Picking drunkards or laborers will give you easier targets.

  • While labourers and drunkards may be the most straightforward targets, they will give you lower-valued items. Aiming for fighters/nobles will gain higher valued items but also hold greater risk of you being attacked if you’re caught out. This can result in your demise especially if you’re still leveling.
  • Remember crouching uses stamina, if you haven’t got a lot of stamina this will dwindle fast so watch out. Exhausting your stamina while crouching will automatically bring you out of stealth, which can cause you to get caught if you’re in the wrong place.
  • When you’re ready to dispose of/wash the items you want to keep, go to a Fence. Outlaw RefugeEarn your gold

The Useful Skills

Skill lines can help make your thieving adventure easier. Legerdemain will help you with cracking those safe boxes or breaking and entering into NPC’s houses. These passives will help you increase your chances of pickingpocketing success. Improved Hiding and Light Fingers will definitely help in getting greater success if you have the points to spare.

Improved Hiding

Light Fingers

The Thieves Guild skill line will help you with reducing the detection rates of witnessesAnd guards.

Veil of Shadows

If you’re a VampireYou can put your point in the passive. Dark Stalker which reduces the time it takes to get into crouch faster by 50% at night and will ignore the speed penalty, which is useful especially if your build isn’t stamina based.

Dark Stalker

Note that every skill requires a level to unlock it. Also, players should be aware that the higher the skill tiers are the more powerful they will be.

A passive is also available in the Medium Armor skill, which will reduce both the cost of sneaking and the detection area of each Medium Armor piece.

Improved Sneak

Consumables

If you’re wishing to prolong your crouch time, buying/making some Stamina potionsYou can use Alchemy could be what you need, especially if you don’t want to keep crouching and uncrouching. It isn’t a necessary consumable but it can be helpful if this is a scarce resource.

Invisibility potions can make all the difference especially if you don’t have skill points to spend on the aforementioned skill lines. Although the effect is temporary, it can give you cover if there are many witnesses who could easily expose your clever ways. You can simply take a potion to steal an item when the higher percentage of theft is activated (goes green). However, you won’t be able to hide if you try to open safe boxes and locked doors (similar Nightblade skills).

Extra Tips

  • You have already joined the Dark BrotherhoodYou will have to pay attention to not misunderstand the instructions on how to use the app. Blade of WoeYou can. Same goes with those who have become Vampires, if you’re too far away from your target you could trigger the feed on screen instruction to show.
  • Get close as possible to targets as you will only get a certain window to pickpocket, if they move/start to walk as some NPCs do this will cause the % of chance of pickpocketing to change if can’t keep up. You will have more time to jump into action if you are closer than necessary.
  • Pick targets with few witnesses and avoid guards. They will likely attack you if they catch you.
  • If you are targeting safe boxes, try to pick ones that aren’t out in the open if you haven’t leveled your lockpicking skills. This will allow you to take more time in tackling those locks, before wandering NPCs return.
  • If things don’t go well as you planned, and you end up racking up a bounty that you rather not pay, try to port to wayshrines that are located close to fences. Alkir Desert or Rawl’kha in Reaper’s MarchThese are great spots to go, as they’re away from guards’ prying eyes and allow you to slip into the fence for selling your products.
  • You can stock up on edicts to have a second set of hands in case you are unable to collect bounties. This is possible by continuing Thieves guild quests. These are usually good for soaking up 500 gold of bounty a piece, and can come in handy especially when you are still practising your technique or haven’t leveled the recommended skills yet.

The edicts you create can be used for bounties, and they are kept in your inventory.
