Not all of these mechanics will be present in each of the trilogy’s sections since some functionalities have been removed completely or have remained entirely the same. If you’re new to Mass Effect and you want to understand how CombatIf this is you, the Guide may be for you.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Beginner’s Guide to Combat Mechanics (Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3)

Mass Effect Legendary has a large production. There are 3 games, however, each game does things slightly differently. One of the most notable changes is Combat, which is why we’ve dedicated an entire guide just to it. Below you’ll find the similarities a differences of combat in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, as well as helpful tips to increase your chances of survival.

Mass Effect 1

Squadmates

The game has 6 Squadmates, but only 2 can be brought at a given time. They can be recruited through the following steps: MissionsSome are not available because they serve the Alliance Military, but others may be. Should you decide to swap Squadmates, you’ll have the chance to allocate their points by simply going to the Talents UI.

ME1 6 Squadmates

Ideally, it’s best to bring those who specialize in the Skills that you lack proficiency in to balance out your Squad’s strength. This ensures that you’re able to efficiently bring down enemies. For example, if you’re a VanguardThis is the Combat and Biotic Specialist combined in one. Class, it’s best to bring a Squadmate who specializes in TechIt is possible to. The next step is to decide whether you would like a Biotic Specialist or Combat Specialist.

The Legendary Edition allows you to command Squadmates individually, much like Mass Effect 2 or 3. Each Squadmate has a unique key that allows you to direct their movement.

The Tactics HDD

You can use the Tactics HUD to perform a variety of tasks in order to command your Squad. You can pause the game and select what you want to do. Abilities that you and your Squadmates will employ given the current situation you’re faced with, similar to how the Real-Time with Pause System in CRPGs works. These can be dragged to Quick Slots so that you have quick access to them during fights. Note that you can’t add your Squadmates’ Abilities to Quick Slots so instead, you’ll have to manually activate it from the Tactics HUD UI. To aim, hold the Right Mouse Button and drag it like you would when moving your reticle to target enemies using a laser. Weapon

ME1 Tactics HUD

It allows you to navigate through different enemy types and their proximity to you, and then choose the right Weapons. You can also direct your Squadmates in order to advance, remain in position, attack, rally or stay beside you.

Armes

In Mass Effect 1, there are four types of weapons. Pistols Assault Rifles Shotguns Sniper Rifles. All of the Weapons in this original game can be used by all classes. The catch however is they don’t have proficiency with some of them. To determine whether or not you’re trained in using a specific Weapon, you’ll have to zoom in via your Mouse’s Right Click Button when that Weapon is active. The drawback of using Weapons you don’t have proficiency with is the accuracy and damage penalties you receive.

ME1 Sniper Rifle Zoom In

Comparatively in the Legendary Edition, all Weapons are still available to any Class except that when you use them, you’ll no longer be penalized so it you can choose whatever you like. Each Class will still have their own weapons. TalentsSome Weapon types have bonuses that increase their effectiveness. Ultimately, it’s better to equip those that you can get bonuses from because this would be more efficient and effective in the long run.

For example, if you’re playing as an Adept, who is trained at using Pistols, I’d recommend sticking with this in order to rank up its corresponding Talent and Abilities. A Squadmate can take care of the long-range damage by training with a Sniper Rifle. You should note that only the Pistol, the best Weapon for any Class can be used. Each class has access to the Pistol. Marksman AbilityIt increases the accuracy of your shots and reduces errors.

ME1 Advanced Marksman

The Legendary Edition has some improvements in the way you use Weapons. Optimized reticle bloom and Aiming Down Sights (or ADS) as well as aim assist were all added. Sniper Rifle owners like me, have noticed a decrease in erratic shaking after zooming in. This has improved stability. Additionally, headshots inflict larger amounts of damage to all enemies when previously, it hasn’t been this way.

Shots Before OverheatThe number of shots you can take before the weapon is rendered unusable by overheating.

ME1 Shots Before Overheat

You can monitor heat buildup by looking at your Overheat Meter located on the left sidebar. If this has been maximized, you won’t be able to fire shots from that specific Weapon so you’ll either have to hide behind a cover or switch to another Weapon while waiting for your first one to cool down. As such, it’s best to execute short bursts of fire to reduce the chances of overheating.

Note that in the Legendary Edition, the cooldown rate of Weapons is faster so you’ll be waiting less. Heat resets immediately after activating the corresponding Weapon Ability. This means you can instantly use the disabled Weapon to fire again. In Mass Effect 1, you don’t have ammo or bullets so instead, you rely on your Shots Before Overheat Attribute to determine if you can use your Weapon at the moment or not.

Survival of Combat Contacts

In combat, you’ll have to remember a couple of things that can help you execute Abilities effectively, shoot better by doubling the base accuracy of your Weapons, and survive longer. You can use covers to minimize fatigue and perform Melee Attacks.

Covers & Fatigue

First is utilizing covers that are made up of scattered objects, big enough to hide behind when you’re in a crouched position. Every fight should be inspected to ensure you are looking for them. To execute your attacks and to see if it is possible to safely travel from one cover to the next, you can also look from side-to-side. Legendary Edition includes more covers for certain encounters. It makes it easier to manage the fights. Your active weapon’s accuracy increases every time that you position yourself in a crouched posture.

ME1 Cover

When you’re running while in combat, may it be towards the enemy or from cover to cover, you expend what’s known as Storm Speed. If you run for continuous periods of time, you’ll experience Fatigue, which is has a respective meter at the lower left-hand side of your screen beside your active Weapon. You’ll have to manage this resource well because if you become fatigued, you won’t be able to run. This will reduce your chances of successfully avoiding enemy attacks. The remastered version allows you to sprint out of combat.

Melee Attacks & HP Recovery

When you wanted to use Melee Attacks in Mass Effect 1 you had to approach enemies close enough that you could hit them with your Weapon. This button has been made easier in the Legendary Edition. It works similarly to Melee Attacks that you can perform in Mass Effect 2 or 3. Although these attacks do not deal much damage, they can cause serious injury to enemies.

Lastly, remember that unlike in other games, you don’t automatically restore depleted HP, which is only available to some Classes or if you have Armor ModsIt is equipped. Use to replenish your HP. Medi-gelsThese are also resources that you can get from containers. In the Legendary Edition, these have been optimized meaning, its respective cooldown time has been reduced, allowing you to reuse it faster in the event that your Squad’s HPs are dangerously low.

The Mako

You can use the Mako to travel around the planets that are available via the Galaxy Map of the Normandy. Since the different environments can be harmful at times, it’s best to stay inside, plus, you gain the benefit of attacking enemies with heavy artillery such as Cannons and Machine Guns. You can zoom in using these Weapons the same as with your Cannons. ShepardYou can zoom in up to three times. Zooming in can be increased up to three times, increasing the precision of your shots. A third zoom increases the likelihood of hitting an enemy. A reticle in the form of a red triangle also appears in front of them, similar to how Shepard’s Weapons work, as an indicator if you can hit them within range.

ME1 The Mako

In the Legendary Edition, you’ll no longer be penalized, XP-wise. If you defeat enemies outside the Mako and use its Weapons instead, you will receive no bonus XP. This is great news, and means you don’t have to worry about “how” you fight enemies.

Additionally, The Mako offers ShieldsIt is protected from any damage by a battery that will automatically charge over time. When it has been fully depleted, the vehicle’s HP will be affected.

Instead of using Medi-gels to restore the hull’s functionality in the event of damage, you must repair the Mako. Because of this, it’s important to have at least one Tech Specialist in your Squad who has sufficiently ranked up their Electronics TalentTo restore more of the damaged part. Upon performing these repairs you’ll expend Omni-gelsThis can either be obtained in containers or by converting non-important items. EquipmentThis is how it works. Make sure that you’re in a safe location when you do this since the Mako will be momentarily stagnant.

The best thing about the new version is the way you can control the wobbly car back in its original form. The newly improved Mako feels heavier so it’s less prone to bouncing around uncontrollably. You also have access to optimized thrusters that allow you to increase the Mako’s movement speed. In the beginning, it was limited to lifting vehicles to avoid missiles or obstacles. Your Mission won’t end in failure if it touches Lava.

You will not find the Mako in Mass Effect 1!

Mass Effect 2

Squadmates

You can have as many Squadmates total, including the ones from DLCsThe number of players has increased to 12 from 6. They are recruited in a similar fashion as in this game’s predecessor, that is, by accomplishing MissionsThese are the ones that they have. Once you leave the Normandy, you’ll still be able to choose two to bring on quests with prompts that show how you wish to distribute their Power Points as well as the appropriate WeaponsDo not hesitate to ask for help.

Similar to Mass Effect 1, you’ll have to bring Squadmates who specialize in the Skills you’re not proficient with to prepare your Squad in order to effectively damage and kill enemies.

Command HUD

Mass Effect 2’s Command HUD functions the same as Mass Effect 1’s Tactical HUD. This means that you can still pause Mass Effect 1 to plan an attack sequence. However, the HUD has been upgraded. The major difference is you can now assign your Squad’s PowersYou can only put your own Powers into Quick Slots. You can now activate multiple Powers from one command, without needing to click each of them manually.

ME2 Command HUD

It is also possible to identify buttons that have not been activated by highlighting them with red and a down arrow. These buttons can be activated by activating one of the following: Incendiary AmmoTo weaken ArmorYou are unable to use the product or prevent you from using it UnityIf all of your Squadmates have survived, respective. Additionally, the red color can also signify that a Power is ineffective on the enemy you’ve targeted due to certain constraints. Activating WarpBecause it reduces Armor, Biotic Barriers and Power, you will lose your power when you bring down Shields. It can be used right away if the Power’s color is orange. Lastly, when the Power’s color is grey, it’s undergoing a cooldown period.

The default actions for commanding Squadmates in Mass Effect 1 were updated. Now, instead of choosing from four options, you have the option to command your Squadmates with one Key per Companion to move, attack or regroup.

Armes

Mass Effect 2 drastically changes the way Weapons function together with mods, heat, and ammunition. Mass Effect 1’s attributes have been completely eliminated. Instead, most Weapons now use Thermal Clips, which serve as heat dissipators and ammo so you can’t shoot when these are empty. You now have the ability to reload.

Thermal Clips

Thermal Clips are easily acquired by simply approving the item. You will find clips on counters and floors, or near enemy corpses. If your backup ammo, or the total ammo that you have prior to reloading, is filled up, you won’t be able to pick up additional clips even if your loaded ammo is not full. Loaded ammo is what’s readily available to your Weapon before firing a shot. You can only replenish this ammo when you hit the reload button. As such, it’s important to always reload to reduce the capacity of your backup ammo, thereby allowing you to acquire more of these thermal clips. While Squadmates may have unlimited amounts of clips they can still reload weapons when the ammo is low.

The universal thermal clip is used for all Light Weapons. Heavy WeaponsPower Cells are also used in the following games: These cells are usually found in crates before major encounters, where you face a lot of bosses or enemies. If your Power Cells are maxed out, you’ll receive 100 credits plus full Light Weapon clips instead.

ME2 Heavy Weapon

Legendary Edition: The drop rate of ammunition, particularly for the Legendary Edition is lower than the regular edition. Sniper RiflesYou can now expect to see more of them in combat.

Different Weapon Types

The Weapon Types in Mass Effect 2 have been increased from 4 to 6  and are identified as Heavy Pistols Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles, ShotgunsAnd the new Submachine GunsHeavy Weapons; the first five are classified as Light Weapons. Any given Mission Assignment ShepardOnly one type of Weapon is allowed, while Squadmates may have up to two. You must still determine which Weapons can be included in your loadout. ClassProficiency. You can find out more. SoldiersYou can outfit almost every one of them, except Submachine Guns. SentinelsOnly Heavy Pistols are allowed to be used.

You can still take advantage of bonuses in weapon accuracy and damage. Zooming in close behind a cover increases your accuracy. When you’re shooting enemies up close with any Weapon except for a Sniper Rifle, you gain a bonus to damage. Similar to this game’s predecessor, if you decide to shoot from outside of your Weapon’s range, you’ll receive a damage penalty.

Please note: Heavy weapons can only be purchased by Shepard, not your Squadmates. It is an extremely powerful weapon that can disable enemies while helping them hide behind cover. Additionally, Heavy Weapons are available to all classes.

Weapon Upgrades

Mods are no longer available for certain Weapons or Ammo, which can be used to upgrade them. You can instead rely on your research for improvements to all of your Weapons. Research is one of the new features in Mass Effect 2 that isn’t limited to upgrading Weapons. It also boosts your ship’s defenses and your Squadmates’ Powers. This is usually performed in the Normandy’s Research Terminal located at the Tech Lab. You can use this terminal whenever you start research projects. ResourcesSuch as Platinum Element Zero. A Weapon Upgrade for Heavy Pistols can be seen as the Sabot JacketingThis allows your Squad to deal additional damage of 50% against enemy Armor.

ME2 Sabot Jacketing

Ammo Upgrades

Ammo Upgrades are now possible with the help of Ammo Powers to modify the way you damage enemies depending on the protective layer they’re wearing. Tungsten rounds are no longer used to do more damage to Synthetics. There are many Ammo Powers that you can use based on the Class you choose and your Squadmates. An example is the Disruptor AmmoAdditional 40% available Weapon DamageSynthetics, Shields. You can activate only one Ammo power at a given time. You can override this by choosing another Ammo Power.

Armor

Mass Effect 2 added more armor to the game. Armor is not limited to Shields and does not deal damage to HP. Now, there are 3 types of protective layers that you’ll have to be aware of when fighting enemies and these are Armor, Shields, and Biotic Barriers.

Armor Upgrades, Customization & Sets

You can also research, similar to weapons Armor UpgradesThe Research Terminal of the Normandy allows you to reduce damage and increase your maximum HP. Shepard uses the following: N7 ArmorThis can be modified by switching Helmet Chest PiecesFor example, to improve your overall performance. You can also find multiple Armor SetsDLCs can provide protections and resistances that are already built into the product. An example is the Cerberus Assault ArmorYou get a 10% increase in your HP, Shield Strength and Heavy Weapon Ammo Capacity.

ME2 Cerberus Assault Armor

Like the N7 only, Kestrel Armor SetCan be modified by replacing parts that were purchased at DLCs or from merchants.

Power Combos

Your Combat, Tech and Biotic Skills remain the same as in Mass Effect 3’s predecessors, however, the striking difference is the addition of the new Power Combos Mechanic, which allows you to inflict more damage onto your enemies. By combining two, you can create strong and volatile explosions. PowersYou can do it sequentially.

A Source Power, Primer or Detonator Power are required to effectively create a Power Combo. Primers determine the type of Power Combo you’ll execute whereas the Detonator will set off the combo. Reave or Cryo Blast can be used as Primers. They also have effects that interrupt enemies for short periods. Detonators, such as Nova, Carnage and Concussive shot, deal immediate damage. There are some Powers that can be used as both a Primer AND a Detonator. You will definitely have the opportunity to test many combinations. The total number of Power Combo Types is 4, which are: Biotic Electric Flame Cryo Combos.

Biotic Combos can be triggered by combining two Biotic Powers, such as Warp and Pull. This causes an explosion which inflicts tremendous damage on the targets. ArmorBarriers, and the surrounding area of multiple enemies to knock them down.

ME3 PullME3 Warp

Combining Powers that harness electricity and a detonator to create electric combos can be used. Combining Overload and Concussive Shot can do twice as much damage to Shields, while shocking unprotected opponents.

When you combine Powers using the flame effect with detonators, Flame Combos can be created. Combining Incinerate and Carnage will result in twice the damage for Armor to be broken down, as well as unprotected enemies being burned. Cryo Combos can be used to combine Powers with the freeze effects, in contrast to Flame Combos. Combining Cryo Ammo and Biotic Charge can cause unprotected enemies severe damage by either freezing them or shattering their heads.

Weapons

Mass Effect 3: All Classes can equip and effectively use any Weapon, however, there’s a catch. Weapons can now be equipped with weights that increase your total weight. As a default, soldiers have the largest weight capacity, while engineers and adepts have the lowest. Note that if you exceed the number of allowable weight capacity, your Powers’ recharge times will be much slower. You can use your Powers more often if you are below this threshold.

They are also the most dangerous weapons. Shotguns Sniper RiflesThe lightest are the most fragile Heavy Pistols Submachine GunsThis is a. You can customize your character by focusing your attention on Power Combos that include a backup heavy pistol or using more Weapons to enhance your Powers.

ME3 M-3 Predator I

Weapon Upgrades

By incorporating, Weapon Upgrades returned to their roots. Weapon ModsMass Effect 1: You can apply at most 2 mods, however, you can’t stack and use the same mod twice, unlike in the first game. They can be installed using a Weapon bench or prior to starting a game. MissionYou can. Note that if you find another mod that you already have in your inventory, that same mod will be improved so you’ll obtain its higher tiered version. You can also use these to reduce the weight of your Weapons, giving you access to other Weapon Types, thereby lessening the penalty imposed on your Powers’ cooldown times. You can rank up your Powers to increase your overall weight.

ME3 Shotgun

Examples of Weapon Mods include the Assault Rifle Magazine Upgrading which increases shots before reloading and the Pistol High Caliber Barrel which greatly improves Weapon Damage. Maximum level for mods is 5. This level grants you more bonuses when adding the mod to your weapon. These mods can be obtained through merchants and explorations.

Gates

Mass Effect 3 introduced a Shield/Barrier Gates mechanic. Shield/Barrier Gates negate certain Weapon damage percentages by boosting the enemy’s damage reduction attribute depending on the Combat Difficulty you’ve chosen. The enemy’s remaining damage is decreased by certain amounts after they have been stripped of all their Shields and Barriers. This is done in an effort to reduce the number of single-shot kills on protected enemies. These are the damage reductions based upon Combat Difficulty:

Stop Fighting Difficulty Reduce Damage (%)
Normal 50
Hardcore 75
Insanity 100

Similar mechanics have been created ShepardThese are also known as the Health and Shield Gates. You temporarily lose your Shields/Barriers, and you are immune to any damage. Additionally with the Health Gate, if you only have 5% HP left, you’ll also be immune to any form of damage. Note that in both instances, there’s a cooldown period. For Shield Gates, it’s cooldown is 4 seconds whereas for Health Gates, it’s 3 seconds. This extra feature prevents you instantly from dying by giving you more time to react. This is the invulnerability time for Combat Difficulty:

Stop Fighting Difficulty Sec: The Invulnerability Period
Narrative 1
Casual 0.75
Normal 0.
Hardcore 0.25
Insanity 0,1

Survival of Combat Contacts

Cover & Fatigue

Cover System is optimized so that it’s easy to move between covers by simply rolling on the floor or running towards the nearest cover. There are also floor gaps that you can jump onto.

Fatigue has been removed, which means that you can sprint to your heart’s content when you’re in and out of combat.

Heavy Melee attacks

The introduction of Heavy Melee Attack has enhanced Melee Combat. This is activated when the Melee button is held down. This does a lot more damage than your standard Melee Attack. If they’re very close to you, this can lock them in place and ensure successful hits. Your Melee Damage can be increased even further with the Fitness Power. At Rank 4, it deals additional 30% damage and at Rank 6 you get an extra 30% of damage. These customizations are called Melee Damage or Melee Synergy.

ME3 Fitness Power

Combat will be easier if you are familiar with the Mass Effect mechanics. It will also help you plan your attacks more effectively especially when you’re fighting against tougher enemies.
