Path of Exile: Atlas of Worlds & Maps Guide

Act 10 will make the Maps system available. After you have completed Act 10, the Map system will be available to you. The Path of ExileYou can use maps to help you navigate. Maps will start dropping somewhere around Act 8, but you won’t be able to use them until Templar LaboratoryAct 10 of The Epilogue has reached this conclusion.

Templar Laboratory will be where you’ll play a lot of map system

What do you get when we complete maps? You get more EXP, which makes it easier to level up and gain powerful loot as well as lots of currency.

Map Basics

Maps can only be used if they are placed in the correct format. Map Device that is located in Templar’s Laboratory and Chamber of Sins (Act 7). You will find 6 portals leading to the same location. The location depends on what Map item you put into your device. Six portals allow you to access the same map six more times without having to give up.

6 Portals are available by using Map Device

The biggest issue here is quite an obvious one – what to do with all the loot picked up here? It is impossible to sell and store it. This means you have to abandon the map. The portals allow you to find items that are available and then bring them back to vendors. Expect a large amount of loot to choose from, so be very picky with the items you gather there, otherwise you will find that 6 portals just won’t be enough.

Every Map includes a TierWhich determines the scale of the map.

  • Tier 1-5 equals levels 68-72
  • Tier 6-10 equals 73 -77
  • Tier 11-17 equals 78-84

Initial drops will only be of lower tier. Play the maps you have to increase your tier. Blue Magic Selten (Yellow). There is a possibility that enemies may drop from these maps. +1While Map BossesHave a good chance of falling +2 tier maps.

Examples of Rare Maps with many Modifiers

Moving to higher-tier maps can cause significant difficulty increases. Higher tiers mean more difficult mods and higher stats.

Atlas of Worlds

You can see your progress on the Atlas by seeing which sections you’ve completed. This expansive map tree shows how far you are along the way. The likelihood of receiving a map with a higher level drop is increased by completing more maps. It is important to keep in mind that the map cannot drop from any map connected before it has been completed. It can be dropped from any map within the same tier after it is completed. This means it will not only drop from connected maps anymore.

Atlas is massive and this is where you will spend the majority of your time in the final-game.

Another rule can be helpful in farming needed maps. You can have two locked maps linked to one map that you’re already running. If the connected map drops, there is 50/50 chance it will become one of those connected locked maps. It is 66/33 possible that one of the connected locks has been unlocked if it’s not already been used.

To make the map count as complete on the Atlas you’ll need to create it. Doing white maps won’t count as completed on the Atlas. Maps will not be considered complete if they are completed with other rarities like these:

  • Tier 1-5 (White), require Map to be of Magic. (Blue) rare
  • Tier 6-10 (Yellow), requires map to be rare (Yellow).
  • Tier 11-17 (Red), Map must be corrupted

You will need orbs to increase Map rarity. Use the Orb of TransmutationOn a White Map, you can make a Magic (Blue), Rarity Map. Orb of AlchemyOn a white map, Rare Yellow Maps are created.

Vaal orbs are usually worth the effort, as long as they are not too difficult to use.

First, use Orb of Alchemy for Rare to corrupt the map. Then use Vaal OrbTo Corrupt it. Be warned that when corrupting maps there is a chance that the whole map will change and won’t grant you completion if you finish it because requirements weren’t met.

Zana

Zana is an important npc in the end game. When Atlas of Worlds introduces her to you, she is the first encounter with Zana. After completing her first mission, she is able to be seen in the wild via maps and the Eternal Laboratory. You can hire Zana once she reaches level 2. Hideout

Zana, an important end-game NPC that you can recruit for your Hideout after reaching level 2, is Zana

Zana comes with a number of functions.

  • Zana’s Map Device is unique because you can add specific modifiers to maps by using Chaos Orbs
  • Maps for SaleBased on her level. Map pool changes depending on her level and the completion of dailies.
  • Get Specials Daily Quests
  • Provides maps with specific prefix ‘This Map’s Modifiers to Quantity of Items found also apply to Rarity
  • Sell Lost WordsDivination Cards to Orbs of Opportunity

Cartography

Map crafting is more than just upgrading the rarity of a map. It can be difficult to craft higher tier maps, especially upgraded ones. Some builds can handle only specific affixes while others won’t be able to survive them at all, this is why the crafting system is here. There are a lot of items we can use on Atlas and Maps to help change things around, so let’s go over the most important ones.

Cartographer’s Chisel

This item can be used for increasing Quality of the MapYou can find it here. Quality is improved with every use 5%Up to Maximum 20%Normal (white) maps. A higher quality map will increase the item quantity and in turn, decrease the likelihood of your maps being dropped. Map drop rates are only affected by map bonus quantity. Map drop rates aren’t affected by increased Item Quantity or Increased Item Roarity of gear, except Unique Maps.

Best way to use Cartographer’s Chisels since they are not easily obtained, is when trying to advance from Yellow Tier maps to Red Tier, and on Red Tier maps to increase drop rates for the highest level ones. Make sure you use them Only on regular mapsNot rare or magic. The map rarity will affect the quality of your bonus. Bonuses are not available for magic or blue ones 2.2%Only on rare (Yellow) or unique (Orange), this bonus is not available. 1% per Chisel.

Cartographer’s Chisel can be obtained in these ways:

  • Drops starting at 50-zone or more
  • Zana offers 20 Chisels per day for 12 Chaos Orbs
  • Artisan Strongboxes can be dropped
  • Vendor recipe: 1x Gavel (Rock Breaker) or Stone Hammer, with 20 Quality (any rarity), 1x Any Map
  • 1. Vendor recipe: Any map with 20 percent quality
  • The Vendor Recipe is any number of maps that have a total quality greater than 40%
  • One Cartographer Divination Card may be exchanged for 10 Chisels
  • Set of 5 Emperor’s Luck Divination Cards can be exchanged for 5 Chisels but rewards from this set are random, so Chisels might not be one of them

Orb of Scouring

This item is able to be used for removing all Implicits and Affixes from Magic and Rare maps. This is a very handy item that can be used to remove affixes from Magic and Rare maps. Instead of throwing away that map, you can use Orb of Scouring instead to get rid of everything except the map’s quality. Corrupted status will also not be removed by the Orb of Scouring.

These are the ways to get Orb of Scouring:

  • Drops from your enemies
  • Catarina, level 6, starts to sell 30 Orbs for Scouring and 96 Orbs Of Chance
  • Vendor Recipe: Any rare item with 2 affixes. You can create this by using the following: Regal Orb on a one-affix magic item or by using an Orb for Annulment on a rare item
  • For 30 Orbs Of Scouring, a set of nine No Traces Divination cards can be exchanged.
  • Set of 5 Emperor’s Luck Divination Cards can be exchanged for 5 Orbs but rewards from this set are random so Orbs might not be one of them

Orbs of Alteration & Augmentation

They are two of the most commonly dropped currencies, and it shouldn’t be a problem to have large quantities. You can use them in map making. The Orb of Alteration is a tool that reforges magic (blue), maps with new modifiers. Orb of Augmentation is a new magic modifier that adds random magic to the magic map (blue).

Although they are very easy to acquire, Orb of Alchemy is a better option to obtain the Rare map and many other modifiers.

Cartographer’s Sextants

This item applies to the Atlas. It creates a circular area where the Sextant specific modifier can be applied. Every map that is located inside that circle, will have Sextant’s modifier applied.

Sextant modifiers are good for three uses within the radius. There are three types of sextants.

  • Apprentice Cartographer Sextant – for tier maps 1-5
  • The Journeyman Cartographer’s Sextant – for tier maps 1-10
  • Master Cartographer Sextant – for tier maps 1-17

While sextants may be currency, which can drop from enemies or chests in maps for cash, they are rare. Sextants can be saved and traded to other players, if there is no clear plan for where they will be used. Trade 3 Apprentice Sextants to 1 Journeyman or 3 Journeyman to 1 Master.

Cartographer’s Seal

This is an item that can be used to remove a map from a completed project. You can choose from three versions.

Versions for Apprentice and Journeyman tiers 1-5; Master tiers 1-10. So why even use Cartographer’s Seal if it is going to uncomplete a map you have already finished? It becomes part of your droppool and can drop when you discover maps. Each map is not necessarily worth the effort. Let’s say you are fond of tier 14 Map A for whatever reason, but don’t enjoy tier 14 Map B, then it may not be that wise to complete Map B and add it to your drop pool, where it reduces the drop rate of your Map A.

Cartographer’s Seals are currency that can drop from enemies and rarely from chests. For 1 Master, you can trade 3 Apprentice seals and 3 Journeyman.

Chaos Orbs

When using Zana’s map device there is an option to add specific modifiers but they cost Chaos Orbs. You should ensure that you have the right map before you spend Chaos Orbs. This method should only be used on Red Tier maps (11-67).

Chaos Orbs, a currency you can get from enemies or chests, are available. By trading a full set of rares that are lvl 60+,  you will receive 1 Chaos Orb. You will get 2 Chaos Orbs if the set is not identified. You will receive 3 Chaos Orbs if the set is not identified and each piece meets 20% quality.

Map Fragments

These are the items you use with the Map device’s fragments.

You can choose from 4 sets of fragments with each piece opening to different areas.

  • Sacrifice FragmentsThis is Queen Atziri.
  • Mortal FragmentsThat will make Queen Atziri stronger
  • Prophecy FragmentsThat leads to The Pale Court
  • Atlas Fragments that lead to the Shaper’s Realm

This fragment can be used for more than just opening new areas. If you add 1 fragment to any map, it will raise Item Quantity by 5% for a Sacrifice or 10% for a Mortal fragment. As long as there are no duplicates, fragments can be stacked.

Shaper’s Orb

These orbs can be traded but are not tradeable. They are useful for upgrading map tiers. Shaper’s Orb increases tier of the map by +5The prefix Shaped will be used. By increasing map tiers with Shaper’s Orbs only the difficulty will be increased, so it will not a increased item rarity, quantity or monster size. This orb is able to be used to raise the level of monsters and items.

Shaper’s Orbs are obtained by giving Memory Fragments to Zana. You can find Memory Fragments by killing Elder-influenced map bosses circled in purple at the Atlas.

Final Tips & Summary

The end-game Map system is quite a complex one to master, but after  you invest some time into maps and hopefully with the help of this guide, things will gradually start to fall in place. You will soon be able to create your own strategy for running Atlas.

Although running maps correctly can be very rewarding, it is not always easy. It all comes down to RNG at the end.

These are some tips to help you get started.

  • This is the most important recipe to know is that selling 3 same tier maps yields 1 map that is 1 level higher. This is an extremely useful tip!
  • Utilize Vaal OrbsModifying maps can be a worthwhile task as you will get many modifiers added and a chance to receive +1 for the rerolled map. In most cases, the returns from maps are worth it.
  • Atlas completionIt is a good way to increase the chances of maps being dropped at higher levels. It is recommended to complete first all-white and then yellow maps.
  • Quantity of the item Item Variety Monster Pack SizeThe most valuable modifiers on a map are
  • Red Maps and Modifiers should be avoided as not all builds can perform every stage.
    • The Best Affixes increased monster damage, reduced player resistance, more unique bosses.
    • Bad Affixes monsters reflect damage, monsters take reduced damage from critical strikes and areas have patches of ground type.

While there is much more to learn, these are the basics that should enable everyone to start to grasp the system. We hope this guide was enjoyable and helps you in your Atlas journey!
