A collision in Connecticut kills a Connecticut high school hockey player

GREENWICH, Conn. — A Connecticut 10th grade hockey player died after falling onto the ice during a match and being cut on his neck by the skate of another player, school officials and the police reported.

Thursday’s accident happened as the Brunswick School’s junior varsity team, a college preparatory school in Greenwich for boys, was playing St. Luke’s School from New Canaan.

St. Luke’s identified Friday’s player as Teddy Balkind. Greenwich Police Capt. Mark Zuccerella said that he fell to the ice, and the other player couldn’t stop him and collided with him. Mark Zuccerella said Friday.

Thomas Philip, Brunswick Head School, said that Balkind sustained a cut on his neck. He stated that the hockey game was “entirely ordinary and unremarkable” for those present.

Philip wrote, “I want to commend the medical, coaching, and security staff for all they did in the most horrific of circumstances to sustain him until the ambulance arrived.”

Due to a snowstorm, classes were not held Friday. However, Mark Davis, Head of St. Luke’s School, stated that the school would remain open for the afternoon so the community can grieve.

“There aren’t enough words to describe what is happening at this moment. I am certain that all of us will be there for each other as much as we can.” he stated.
