Story was amongst other shortstops in a competitive free-agent market Carlos Correa, Marcus Semien, Javier Baez Corey Seager — with a résumé featuring two All-Star Games, two Silver Slugger awards and MVP votes during the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Story’s batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage are 60 points lower than at home, while his slugging percentage is 160 points lower and his wRC+ totaling 125 at home, and 98 on the road. Recent history shows that this has been the case. Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieuTroy Tulowitzki and Troy Tulowitzki became significantly better road hitters, with worse home splits, after leaving Colorado. But three players is not an indisputable sample.
Red Sox shortstop, Story, could be moved up to second base. Xander Bogaerts. Story has never been a shortstop in the major leagues. This position was where Story ranked among the top of the majors in 2019, with +18 outs above the average, and was a Gold Glove finalist at the National League.
The 28-yearold has been a big player in the past. In 2018, Story hit 37 and 2019, respectively, and in 2019, he hit 35 homers. That number dropped to 24, in 2021. Story was the fastest shortstop to reach 100 homers in 448 games in 2019, becoming the fastest. He was a top-10 player in the franchise’s history for his six-year stint with Colorado.
He is also known for his strong field glove. In six seasons in Colorado, he averaged over 28.5 feet per sec. (27 feet per se is the MLB standard), and he also had 20 steals in 2021.
