After using an ineligible player, Spain was stripped of the Rugby World Cup spot

Spain celebrate with a sign saying Rugby World Cup 2023 qualified
Spain won the World Cup spot in March 1999 for the first-time since 1999.

After World Rugby determined that Spain had used an ineligible athlete during qualification, Spain was stripped of their 2023 Rugby World Cup spot.

Portugal is now in position to play in the World Cup after Spain was penalized 10 points in the European qualification tournament.

Spain can appeal against the decision.

Portugal will be able to secure their place in the final qualifying tournament in November, while Romania automatically advances over Spain.

Romania played in the World Cup for the first time in 2015, and Portugal was the only country to make it in 2007.

Spain – who have 14 days to appeal – were given a £25,000 fine and will now also have to pay a £50,000 suspended fine from a previous eligibility breach made in qualifying for the 2019 World Cup, which they were also disqualified from.

Other sides in Pool B include South Africa, Ireland, and Scotland. There is also an unconfirmed Asia Pacific qualifier.
