Watson answered questions about two of 22 lawsuits against him that were filed during ongoing depositions. Tony Buzbee (plaintiffs’ attorney) told KHOU 11 Watson was there to answer questions before meeting with the Browns. Watson invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination while sitting for two sessions depositions that began on Friday.
Both Andrew Berry, the Browns general manager, and Kevin Stefanski, the Browns head coach, had declared publicly that Mayfield would continue to be their quarterback until the NFL combine in Indianapolis.
Berry said that Baker is our starter, and that they will bounce back.
That equation was about to change when Watson’s grand jury decided not to indict him. Mayfield’s future is now uncertain with the franchise who selected him No. 1, overall, in the 2018 draft.
Over four seasons, Mayfield has seen a turbulent and up-and-down time in Cleveland. Through his three first seasons in the league, he was under four different head coaches. However, Mayfield was able to lead Cleveland to its first playoff win in 26 years during its 2020 season.
He suffered a torn labrum injury in his left non-throwing shoulder in Week 2. The injury was severe and he struggled for the remainder of the season. He finished 27th in QBR and the Browns missed the playoffs. His 8-9 record was disappointing.
Mayfield underwent surgery to fix the labrum Jan. 19, and is expected be fully healed before training camp. Mayfield is entering his final year of the rookie deal that will pay $19 million in 2022.
