Boston University men’s hockey beats Northeastern, the Beanpot champion three times.

BOSTON — Dylan Peterson scored just 2:48 left and Boston University defeated Northeastern by 1-0 in Monday’s 69th Annual Beanpot Championship.

Vinny duplessis stopped all 20 shots as the Terriers won 31st Beanpot title, their first since 2015.

The Terriers (17-10-3), which outshot the Huskies 29-19, controlled the third period but couldn’t beat Northeastern freshman goalie T.J. Semptimphelter. Peterson converted a 2-on-1 rush.

Semptimphelter had 28 saves, but was unable to stop Peterson’s tap in off Jamie Armstrong’s perfect pass. Jamie Armstrong skated the puck hard down his left side, and then slid the puck across the crease, finding Peterson just outside the far post. Domenick Faensore assisted with the play.

Northeastern (19-9-1), had won three consecutive Beanpot titles. However, its run was cut short last year due to COVID-19.

It was the Terriers’ first win in a Beanpot title match since they lost to Boston College in overtime 1-0 in 2016. It was a replay of the Beanpot championship game in which the Terriers lost to Boston College 1-0 in overtime.

Semptimphelter was again in control of the final, taking over from Devon Levi, the Huskies’ top goalie, at the Winter Olympics. Duplessis kept the scoreless to the end of the third.

Semptimphelter saved Matt Brown’s backhand with a glove save as he skated across crease at 4:49.

Duplessis was the Terriers’ netkeeper while Drew Commesso is competing for Team USA at the Olympics. He didn’t have as many shots as Drew, but he made some great saves when he was. Northeastern had a great opportunity at 5:54 in the second, but Duplessis was there and stopped the shot.

BU had a chance in that final minute, but Brown shot it wide from in front. The game remained scoreless at the end of two periods.

Northeastern also received the first power play opportunity. Unfortunately, it was not to last. Jay O’Brien of BU was called for boarding at 2:02 in the first. Jordan Harris from Northeastern was then called for roughing just 23 seconds later. Both teams could not capitalize on this brief advantage.

The Beanpot felt different this year, with some of the best players from overseas attending the Olympics and some teams having less successful seasons. The Top 10 is missing all four clubs — BU and BC, Harvard, Northeastern, and Northeastern — and only the Huskies (No. 13) and Terriers (17). 17) are not ranked.
