Leicester and Gloucester will compete for the Slater Cup, a trophy named in honor of former lock Ed Slater. diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), June

The trophy will again be up for grabs in each of the Premiership matches.

Slater, who is 34 years old, decided to retire after receiving his diagnosis. He has also started a fundraising campaign.

Next up, the two teams will meet at Leicester on 24 December for the league. There the first Slater Cup is contested.

Slater spent seven seasons with the Tigers, and was the club’s captain for two seasons. He also won the Premiership title with them in 2012-13.

He made 90 appearances in the club’s 2017 season after moving to Gloucester.

Slater stated, “The support my family has received has been amazing; it’s something we never expected.”

“It’s a great privilege for me, my family and I to see two top English clubs competing for a cup named after me. I was a full-time player for Leicester and Gloucester. I am extremely proud to have played for both of these clubs.

Slater started the 4Ed campaign in the summer to raise awareness about MND and money for his treatment. 5% of every ticket sold to the fixture goes to the fund.
