Ellis Genge, Leicester Tigers captain, says that he was inspired by his father’s reality check to improve his game.

The 27-year-old prop has taken the Tigers to the top in the Premiership this season, having started five matches for England in Six Nations.

Genge recalls that an old man told him, “You’re not as smart as you think you’re,” Genge said.

He was kind enough to take a look at me. It was almost a year ago, and I would like to say that I have made a significant change since then.

Genge will be leaving Welford Road at end of season to rejoin BristolAccording to him, he also found inspiration from watching replays of performances that he could improve his form.

Genge said that games in the past have been played when I was much better than I am now,” Genge explained to BBC Radio Leicester.

“But I have never been able to put together consistent performances. It was always a one-in-a-blue moon kind of thing.

“I saw highlights videos and the clips were all in old Leicester kits. I thought it was a good idea to pull my finger out because I am clearly not playing well enough.

“I don’t believe I’ve added much to my game. I am just learning more about myself as a player. As opposed to waiting for it to happen, I am going to make it happen a little more.
