SANTA CLARA (Calif.) — While San Francisco 49ers Kyle Shanahan, coach, has made it clear that this team is now owned by quarterback Trey Lance Although it might have been news to outsiders, Lance was simply doing his job.
Lance stated Thursday that the only difference was that he wanted to stop asking him about it all the times. “It wasn't a moment, or anything like that for me. I have been excited. Since the day I arrived, I have been planning to play. Although I am excited for the year ahead, nothing has changed in my offseason.
Shanahan made the statement Tuesday morning, as the Niners reported for training camp. Shanahan stated that Lance had been expected to be the starter. But Shanahan has previously declined to make such a statement.
With the arrival of training camp and the imminent departure of incumbent starters, however, Jimmy GaroppoloNo one had any reason to delay the inevitable after he passed his physical.
Lance took all the reps in the offseason program with the starting offense and arrived at camp knowing that he had the job. Every practice is an opportunity for Lance to learn how to lead a team with Super Bowl ambitions.
Right now, the goal of the Niners is to improve Shanahan's offense and then turn a focus to Lance's extra skills such as running.
Shanahan stated that “there are certain plays you must be good at in order to succeed in this league” and “move the ball.” And then, what can Trey possibly do that is different than the ones we've seen before? Trey is a threat at any moment, and knowing that that is the case, it definitely changes things. This adds another dimension to defenses.
Lance's two first practice days as the confirmed starter had their ups and also downs. He took 16 snaps during team drills. He operated mostly from the pocket, and appeared to be in control, as he completed 5 out of 7 passes during team drills.
Lance experienced a few more problems on Thursday, including an interception that he threw to his safety. Jimmie Ward A few misfires to open up targets that fell incomplete. Lance was happy with the way the offense rebounded and received large cheers from his fans as he ran down the left sideline for a long run and again when he found receiver. Lance acknowledged that he felt better Thursday than Wednesday despite the miscues. However, he also admitted that turnovers must be stopped (there were three interceptions, in addition to Lance).
Lance can feel confident moving forward knowing that he is free to make and correct mistakes, without having to look over his shoulder.
Lance stated that last year was “definitely in a different place mentally, I would think.” “Just feeling a lot happier this year, coming in knowing my job, knowing how the offense works, and knowing the guys a lot, having been around this team and its coaching staff for a year, it will be a great experience.
Garoppolo has been in the building, continuing his throwing program, but he isn't attending practice because the Niners are looking for a trade partner. Lance stated that he met Garoppolo Tuesday and Wednesday.
Lance stated, “It's not strange at all.” “I have never heard anything that I can say that is negative about Jimmy. He has been a big sister to me from the moment I arrived. And he could have made it hell for me last summer. He didn't. He was a great help to me and I'm so excited to see him in good health. I'm also excited to see him throw again and to see his potential.
