J.J. Watt, Arizona Cardinals: ‘Feel like a Bobblehead’

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals Three-time defensive player and defensive lineman of the year J.J. Watt The Guardian Cap isn't something he likes to wear during training camp, and he didn't hesitate in sharing his opinions on Friday.

Watt laughed.

Watt did not hesitate to answer the question “Can you feel the difference?” when the shell attaches to his helmet.

“You feel like a bobblehead,” Watt deadpanned. “Like you're gonna fall over. This will probably result in me being fined. This is fantastic. This is a complete sham. It's gone for 15 grand.”

For all linebackers, offensive, defensive, tight, and defensive linemen during training camp, the Guardian Cap must be worn. According to the NFL, this period is when helmet impacts are at their highest.

According to the release, The Guardian Cap reduces impact severity by reducing the number of players wearing it. It also reduces impact severity by at most 10 percent if only one player wears it. Watt was well aware that the Guardian Caps are mandatory, but only for a limited time.

He said, “But not in games.” “So, let’s keep it safe — sometimes. I don’t know. Whatever.”

Watt continued to make fun of his comments, implying that he would be punished by the NFL.

“This is fantastic. I'm screwed. Watt stated, “I'm completely screwed.”[NFL commissioner] Roger [Goodell] I will be contacted within five minutes.”

In March, teams voted to adopt the Guardian Cap. This was after “consideration of the recommendations by the Competition Committee (and the Owners’ Health and Safety Advisory Committee) as well consultation with the League's head coaches.” Watt explained that he was able to get used to the Guardian Cap after a while, and understands why they are being used.

He said, “Absolutely.” “I'm not an idiot. Although I might not have worn a Guardian Cap for 12+ years, it doesn't mean I am stupid. Yes, I do. This is why I don't want to get into it too much. I have already made 20 grand. Now we are looking at 50 [thousand] as the next, and then most likely like a four-game suspension. Guardian caps are awesome, I love them. It's a wonderful addition. We should all wear it.

“We had a few guys that may need to wear them just as walking around.”
