Jack Owlett, Worcester Warriors’ prop, said that it was hard to feel so “helpless” when family members were caught up in the conflict in Ukraine.

Owlett is married to Katya. Katya was born in Ukraine to a Russian father and mother, both of whom came to England over 25 years ago.

The extended family of his father-in law are still in Ukraine.

Owlett, 27, stated that there were many of them in Kyiv, but they managed to escape.

“They are lucky to be in the West, but now they say ‘we were Born Here, We’ll Die Here’. I think this is the sad truth.

“The west seems a bit more secure and they’re building any outbuildings that they need to accommodate refugees and assist where possible.”

“It’s very difficult to be over here”

Owlett stated that he was able to keep in touch with his wife’s family through the conflict, which has provided them some comfort.

“We visited after the wedding – I’ve met all of them and we were fortunate enough to have a family Zoom call at the weekend,” he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

They have a curfew and must turn off their lights, but it was nice to meet them and get to know each other.

“It’s hard to see and almost feel helpless here.

Warriors’ appeal for humanitarian aid for refugees fleeing war has received such overwhelming support that the club had to close their Sixways Stadium donations centre after five days of making do with temporary warehouses.

Sixways is doing an incredible job with the collection. I know they are looking for volunteers to help sort through the stuff. “We also did our small collection, but it quickly got out of control with the generosity and solidarity people show,” he stated.

“It is really hard being over there, but we’re trying everything we can support them.”

After being removed from the bench during the recent, he stated that “it’s amazing to be back.” Premiership game at London IrishFor his first action since October.

“I have been longing to return to the pitch and it was so good to finally be able to.”
