Jacob deGrom, New York Mets ace, to make Sunday’s first injury rehab start

NEW YORK — Mets ace Jacob deGrom Is now available to take on a minor league rehab assignment.

Two-time Cy Young Award Winner, the Cy Young Award winner, has been out of action since last July. However, he is scheduled to begin Sunday night’s Class A St. Lucie match against the Jupiter Hammerheads. He is expected to pitch approximately 25 pitches and 2 innings.

This will be deGrom’s first competitive outing since springtraining. He was out of competition all season due to a stress reaction in the right scapula which caused inflammation.

New York made the announcement Saturday, almost a year after deGrom last appeared in a major league game on July 7, 2021. After suffering right forearm tightness, a sore elbow and an injury to his elbow, he missed the second half last season. He returned to spring training and was ready for Grapefruit League starts on March 22nd and 27.

He was then sidelined by stress reactions and didn’t throw another one until June 4. The Mets confirmed that the right-hander, who is 34 years old, has been facing hitters at Florida’s team complex. He felt better after throwing 27 pitches on Wednesday to batters.

Before deGrom can return to New York’s pitching rotation, he will need to do several minor league rehab visits. The process was described by Billy Eppler, the general manager of spring training. Buck Showalter, manager, said deGrom will not return to New York until he is strong enough to pitch at least five innings.

It is likely that deGrom will not be back in the major leagues until the All-Star break, which will occur sometime between late July and early August.
