Kent Johnson, Columbus Blue Jackets prospect and winner of overtime, gives Canada its 19th international junior hockey championship

EDMONTON (Alberta) — Canada’s record-breaking 19th World Junior Hockey Title won by Canada with a win by Kent Johnson, a Columbus Blue Jackets centre. He scored at 3:20 in three-on-three overtime to give Canada victory over Finland.

Johnson, the No. After Canada had blown a two goal lead in the third period, Johnson was the No. After Team USA’s 2021 victory, the Canadians won 7-0 in the postponed tournament.

After having only 13 shots during the first two periods of play, the Finns were credited with 17 shots in the third. Aleksi Heimosalmi scored and Joakimkemell scored to send it into overtime.

Although they had many chances to defeat the Finns, the Canadians were unable to score a single point on the power play.

Canada was represented by Joshua Roy, William Dufour and Dylan Garand. Garand also made 29 saves. Mason McTavish, who had two assists, was the tournament’s highest scorer with eight goals, and nine assists. The tournament’s MVP was the 2021 Anaheim Ducks draft pick.

McTavish was able to clear what appeared to be Topi Niemela’s tournament-winning effort off the goalline just seconds before Johnson scored his deciding goal.

The Czech Republic defeated Sweden 3-1 in the third place game.

Fabian Lysell, Linus Sojodin and Isak Rosen scored for Sweden. Jesper Wallstedt also made 27 saves.

Rosen, a Buffalo Sabres prospect, said that “you strive to win the final game.” “Officially we wanted gold, but better bronze rather than nothing.”

Michael Gut scored for the Czech Republic while Tomas Suchanek stopped all 20 shots.

The tournament was originally held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Dec. 26. After four days, the tournament was cancelled due to rising COVID-19 rates among officials and players.
