Irving requires a trade partner in order to negotiate a long-term contract. However, only the Lakers are interested in signing a sign-and–trade agreement once free agency opens on Thursday, sources claimed.
Sources say that so far, the Nets are not interested in reclaiming any Lakers packages.
The Nets continue to be uncertain about Irving’s future, leaving the franchise at risk. Kevin Durant Sources say that Irving has not made a trade request. Sources say Durant still has four years on his contract, and he is an advocate for Irving to be signed to a long-term contract with the Nets. Durant is a top-ranked player in the sport and many teams are ready to pursue him, sources say.
Irving has until Wednesday for a decision about whether to exercise his $36.5million option on the 2022-2023 seasons. Irving can’t sign and trade after he has signed into the agreement. Irving would be eligible for a trade by the Nets if his contract expires. However, he would not have any formal rights to a landing spot.
Sources say Irving is very interested in joining the Lakers. He could decline the $36.5million option and sign with Los Angeles for $6 million taxpayer-mid-level exception.
Sources said Irving has been unwilling to sign a long-term contract with the Nets, even though he wanted to stay in Brooklyn. Brooklyn seems determined to keep Irving’s contractual status in place, especially considering his absence of availability over the past two years.
