Louis Rees-Zammit claims he learned from Leigh Halfpenny just before his remarkable Test match switch to fullback against Argentina.

In more than 80 appearances for club and country, the British and Irish Lions, the Gloucester wing had not played at all at 15.

Rees Zamit took over when Liam Williams and Wales’ Halfpenny were injured.

“I had to know everything, and he [Halfpenny] He is the man to talk to. He gave me enormous confidence,” he said.

The 21 year-old played an effective full-back role in Wales’ 20-13 Autumn Nations Series win over Argentina.

Rees-Zammit added, “All week Leigh and me sat at computers doing loads of analysis.”

“The difference lies in the backfield. You’re there all the time, and you don’t have the luxury of letting the opposition in your side.

“I was aware that Argentina was threatening and had to get myself into position quickly to ensure they didn’t have the opportunity.

“There’s a lot of kick-kicking these days so you need to be prepared for the fights. When the opportunity presents itself, I am elated.

“Against a team such as Argentina, they don’t give much space so you need to play some ping-pong and see who falls first.”

Halfpenny could face Georgia next weekend, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury. It remains to be seen if Rees-Zammit will continue at full-back.

He also highlighted his world-class qualities and offered Wayne Pivac, Wales’ head coach, another option as the World Cup countdown goes on.

“I can play there” [full-back]”Yes, I will.

“We were short of full-backs so we said I would play there, if needed.”

“I’m a strong supporter of myself, especially when I have players such as Leigh and other people with a lot of experience to help me.”

Rees-Zammit was an important contributor to helping Wales recover from the seven-day-old 55-23 defeat against New Zealand.

“We took a lot of heat on ourselves. He said that he was proud of the performance and thought the boys held up.

“They were always in our 22 and we had long phases where they stuck with us and we won the ball back quite a few times.

“Our physicality was not strong enough to defeat New Zealand and we had no choice but to fix it.”
