Beniers believes that humility is the most important thing. He believes it is more important to focus on the positive aspects of life than what others say.
It is also ironic because people talk about Beniers all the time. Every time someone mentions Beniers, his name is mentioned. Seattle KrakenHis early success. When you start talking about the Calder Trophy Race, his name will often be mentioned. Beniers is just 27 games into his NHL career and he is already well-known in Seattle.
His teammates laugh and joke that they get tired of talking about him. His teammates joke that they are tired of talking about him.
Beniers are so beloved that the Kraken’s intro video for pre-game is only 30 seconds long. It talks about Beniers’ future and how he will be part of “The Next Wave”, the group of players who will lead the franchise in the years ahead.
Beniers will not know a lot about this because he has never read about it.
Beniers stated, “I have never liked seeing things about myself.” “I don’t really understand why. I believe I may have been influenced by other people and not liked it. That’s why I did it when I was young.
Since being drafted by the Kraken with the second selection in the 2021 NHL Draft (#2), Beniers has been managing expectations. The Kraken selected Beniers because they believed they were getting a prospect that projected as a top-line two-way center and could become one of their cornerstones for many years.
The Kraken’s inaugural season was a success, going 27-49-6. This meant that they had to sell the possibility of a better future to their fans. After his sophomore year at Michigan, Beniers signed an entry-level contract. He scored nine goals in his first 10 NHL matches.
Kraken forward Yanni Gourde said. It was that moment when you realize, “This kid is a player.” Many guys who come out college come out of juniors. You don’t know if you have it or not. He’s the kid who really steps on the ice, and you know he will be a great player.
Beniers already had an assist and a point in his NHL debut. His first game at Climate Pledge arena only raised his expectations. Both zones were active and he made plays that anyone could enjoy, whether they were casual fans or more experienced observers.
In that same game, he also scored his first NHL goal. The game went into overtime. Dave Hakstol from the Kraken trusted Beniers so much that he gave him three minutes extra ice time. Beniers’ best performance was when he attempted to set up the game-winning goal in overtime with a no look, between-the-legs pass. He was so confident that he was selected to be one of three Kraken skaters in a shootout.
Kraken forward: “You don’t seem to be surprised by anything he does.” Jordan Eberle. “You’re stunned at how confident he has to come off a college season to enter the NHL and get right into it. He is very confident, but he does it well.
Skill is only part of the whole package. Eberle, who is an alternate captain, stated that Beniers showed the maturity and personality necessary to succeed in an NHL dressing room. Eberle was most impressed by the fact that Beniers did it so late in the season, when the team already had its identity.
First-year players tend to be more reserved than second-year players. They spend time trying to find the dressing room before they speak up and show their personality. Not Beniers. Eberle said Beniers fit in well with the rest.
“He’s sociable. He loves to talk. Eberle explained that he loves to chirp. It is good to have a child who is young enough to be able to get under his skin. You will fit right in.
Beniers’ contributions are another way he has fit in. He is second in team goals and tied for third in points (11). He is third in total ice-time, second in 5-on-5 and second in power play ice-time.
In terms of rookie stats, Beniers leads the pack with 11 points. Second is five goals from Beniers and sixth is five assists. He ranks second among rookie forwards for ice time, and 11th overall among all rookie skaters.
He has also been trusted in the defensive zone. He is sixth among Kraken forwards in defensive zone faceoffs and is fourth in defensive zone starts, per Natural Stat Trick. These numbers show Beniers is becoming the all-around player they believe is in their future.
Beniers shows that even at this stage in his career, he is capable of being a top-six center capable affecting a game from many different angles. One reason why the Kraken have been one of the NHL’s most surprising surprises is because they have Beniers and others.
Gourde stated that Gourde is a “great player and a wonderful human being” which makes him an important member of the organization. You’re not only trying to build a great team each year, but also building a team of good people and character. This is how you create a foundation within an organization.
Good people. This is what Bob and Christine Beniers hoped for their children as they grew older. Their youngest child was playing youth league basketball in Hingham (Mass. ), a Boston suburb.
Beniers had a teammate that was not very good at basketball. Beniers continued to pass the ball to this teammate to ensure that they got some shots in the game.
Bob recalled, “After that game, that child’s mother thanked Matty for her kindness,” She said that her son didn’t touch the ball. That’s what every parent wants their child to be. It’s important to be kind and humble to others and to understand other people’s feelings. It’s more important than playing hockey.
Bob discovered another story. Gourde, his family and friends went to Beniers for Halloween. Will BorgenThe two share a home together. They arrived to find that Borgen, Beniers, and Borgen had been dressed up so Gourde’s daughters could celebrate Halloween with them.
Gourde explained, “Stuff like this is how you can tell they are genuine. Super good, super kind and we appreciated that.”
Borgen and Beniers are housemates who bond over video games, Game of Thrones and playing video games.
“They text each others from their rooms,” quipped a joker Carson SoucyBorgen is seated next to a member of the team’s dressing room in the practice facility.
Borgen stated that Beniers is a clean roommate and is guilty of putting his laundry in the dryer for several days. He claims they don’t cook a lot. Beniers is the one who cooks better when they do. Borgen said that Beniers’ specialty was his garlic bread. These skills may have been displayed by Beniers the weekend before Thanksgiving, when his siblings and parents flew to Seattle to celebrate with Borgen.
They can meet up for dinner and explore new restaurants, as well as see more of Seattle. Beniers also learns how to be a professional athlete while out for dinner.
Borgen stated that some people may want to take a photo with him, others might just want to say hello, while some people simply stare at him. He is a nice, well-educated person and that is what makes him so good at handling things.
What is it like being a Beniers player? How does he manage the demands of being a first-line NHL centre, who could win a Calder and help Kraken in the future, while also doing it in a new market to hockey?
“I have no idea!” Beniers laughs at everyone around him. “I don’t even think about it. I believe I have high expectations, which exceeds everyone else’s. For a lot of the guys on this team, someone might say “You played a great match” and you might feel like you played terrible. It’s the same feeling that I have.”
Bob however has a way to explain it. He says, “It’s surreal.” Their family realizes that it was only a few years ago that Matty left home to play in the National Team Development Program. He still carries the lessons he learned at NTDP with him today. Bob explained that Matty is required to take a break before each game because of the NTDP. This was done to help players understand the effects sleep has on a routine.
Christine and Bob watch Matty’s TV games. They try to meet him in person, if possible. They traveled to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins play the Kraken. They flew to Pittsburgh to celebrate their son’s 20th anniversary. Bob shared that Christine made sure their son got presents and a big hug from his mom, because these things are still important.
Bob stated, “I tell him every day that he is a very fortunate young man.” “I also advised him to take many pictures so he can clearly remember the trip.”
