Minnesota Vikings LB Cameron Smith retires one year after open-heart surgery

Minnesota Vikings backup linebacker Cameron SmithAfter undergoing open heart surgery, he has made the “difficult decision” to quit the NFL. wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday night.

Smith was 24, who underwent surgery last August to correct an enlarged left heart. He had been diagnosed with a genetic disorder after his false positive COVID-19 result. Although he missed the 2020 season, he was set to continue his career in 2021.

Smith took a couple of snaps during Minnesota’s preseason opener, before he was forced to leave in the second half with a concussion.

Smith posted, “For 18 years, football was such a huge part of mine life.” It has brought me many friendships and incredible memories. I have learned invaluable lessons that will be cherished for the rest of my life. After having open heart surgery in December last year, my mind was blown by the things I wanted to see happen to my body. I have come to the conclusion that my body has been asking too much.

“After much thought, and a lot of discussion with my family and friends, I’ve made the tough decision to quit the NFL. This transition will be difficult, but it is something I look forward to.

Smith, who was drafted by the Vikings at the fifth round of the 2019 USC Draft, wrote that he would “forever treasure” all the opportunities that football has given him.
