EAST RUTHERFORD N.J. – The New York GiantsWe are going to hire Mike Kafka at the Kansas City ChiefsA source told ESPN that Daboll will be the offensive coordinator.
Kafka served as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator for the past two seasons. Since 2017, he was Andy Reid’s assistant in Kansas City.
The NFL Network first reported Kafka’s likely hiring.
The Giants narrowed down their search for an offensive coordinator to three finalists: Kafka and Houston TexansPep Hamilton, quarterbacks coach/pass-game coordinator Cleveland Browns wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Chad O’Shea. All three were interviewed by Daboll in New Jersey this week.
Daboll now has his coordinators in place with Patrick Graham running the defense, Thomas McGaughey handling special teams, and Kafka leading the offense. Daboll hired Graham and McGaughey as replacements for Joe Judge. Judge was fired last month after only two seasons.
Graham was named a finalist in the Minnesota VikingsKevin O’Connell, Rams offensive coordinator, is expected to take the head coaching position. At his introductory press conference, Daboll stated that Graham would be returning if he didn’t get a head coaching job in the current cycle.
McGaughey was initially offered the position of special teams coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, but he declined. McGaughey also applied for similar positions at the Carolina Panthers. Los Angeles Chargers Chicago BearsBefore deciding on a return to the Giants.
Kafka, aged 34, was written by the Philadelphia EaglesReid was drafted in the fourth round by Northwestern in 2010. After bouncing around the league for six years, he became an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2016.
The Chicago native joined Reid as an offensive quality control coach in Kansas City. He mentored the players. Patrick MahomesAs a rookie.
It was believed that Reid was particularly fond of Kafka for many years and would make him the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator if Eric Bieniemy was hired as a head coach. Bieniemy will likely be overlooked again this year in the hiring cycle.
