New York Jets make tough decisions about free agents, including Braxton Berrios. – New York Jets Blog

FLORHAM PARK (N.J.) — Before heading off at the end the month to the scouting group, the New York JetsTo plan the free-agent strategy, the front office will meet. They will make some difficult decisions about which players they want to resign, and that is a positive thing.

It wasn't true last year. Safety is the key word here. Marcus MayeOnly three players were granted multi-year contracts with other teams after being given the franchise tag. Guard Pat Elflein, linebacker Jordan JenkinsEdge rusher Tarell BashamThe ATM was not destroyed by any of these people.

Let's look at the 19 current players who have expired or void contracts and rank them in three categories.

Priority-free agents

Kick returner All-Pro Braxton BerriosProtective and offensive tackle Folorunso FatukasiThey would be the most sought-after if they went on the open market. Both players are wanted by the Jets and they have been in contact with their agents for months. Fatukasi's case was a long one. But there is a good chance that they will be sold.

Robert Saleh, the coach, stated that Braxton is his favourite player. “I’ve always sat up here and said it’s our job as a coaching staff to make [general manager] Joe Douglas’ job as hard as possible with regards to re-signing people.”

26-year-old Berrios is a fan favorite and has made a lot with his strong finishes (four touchdowns in the last three games). But is he a full time receiver or a gadget/return specialist? This will be the Jets' answer to that question.

Berrios averaged 5.4 receptions per game and 50.4 yards per contest in the five games where he played at minimum 50% of the offensive snaps. This compares to 92 and 857 for a full-season. His agent is clearly trying to sell Berrios' upside. This has led to speculation that he might be looking for a $9 million-per-year deal. Given that they already paid their WR3-WR4 salaries, it would not surprise if the Jets went so high. Jamison Crowder Keelan ColeEach, $5.5 million

Fatukasi, who turns 27, on March 4, will be a long-lasting, character player. He was a strong, reliable, and high-character defensive lineman who had 16 run stuffs (tackles with no gain or loss on run play plays). According to NFL Next Gen Stats he ranked fifth among league players in run-stuff% (5.75). He was also a first-down and second-down player, but he didn't have any impact on the quarterback (zero tackles). The big bucks go to the sack stars.

What is the value of a top run stuffer at the peak of his career as a free agent and how much? Fatukasi is believed to be asking for $8 million annually, which is not a shocking number considering Dalvin TomlinsonLast year, the company received $10.5 million annually Minnesota Vikings. The Jets have big money in Carl Lawson. Quinnen Williams John Franklin-MyersThey might not be able to travel that far. It's not an easy call. He'd be tough to lose because of their poor run defense.

The “maybe” crowd

This group has some talent, but only four will be in the 29-31 range by training camp: Maye, Crowder and tackle Morgan MosesGuard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. With some exceptions, the market isn't usually very robust for players from this category. The Jets are interested in different players, with much depending on the asking price and market conditions.

Since last offseason's franchise tag, a lot has occurred (not all of it good). It would be surprising if Maye comes back. He received bad advice and misplayed the situation by rejecting the Jets' long term offer (20 million dollars in guarantees), even after his DUI arrest. This was something he kept from the Jets for several weeks. He is likely to be disciplined by the League in the form a suspension. In November, he was diagnosed with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

When asked by Joe Douglas at the end the season if Maye wanted back, he was not willing to answer. He called Maye a “valuable member of the team,” but added, “Any decision that we make, in regards to Marcus or any other player on expiring contracts, the decisions are going to be made in the best interest of the team now and moving forward.”

Maye's rehabilitation is going well. However, he may be looking at a one year, prove-it contract. While he does have some support from the organization and could be obtained at a reasonable cost, it seems like this relationship has ended.

Crowder was the Jets' top receiver for the past three seasons. He caught 132 passes from the slot, which is eighteenth in the league. But he will likely move on. Last offseason was his first warning sign. He had to take $5 million in pay cuts. His durability is questionable as he missed nine games in the last two seasons with soft-tissue injury. Crowder and Berrios could be out of the team. Elijah MooreIt could be the perfect slot.

Moses and Duvernay–Tardif were two of Douglas' most valuable acquisitions. They formed a solid, right-side team in the run match. Duvernay Tardif was replaced by Moses in Week 11. Greg Van RotenAt right guard, the Jets averaged 5.19 yards of rush over the last eight weeks, No. They are currently 2nd in the league. During that span, they averaged a league-high 6.7 yards on runs to the right side, per ESPN Stats & Information.

Although Duvernay Tardif may not be the long-term solution, you can still win with him. They may opt to wait and see. After his contract expires, he can sign with any team. He mentioned recently that a Canadian medical licensing deadline could hinder his ability to play in 2022. But that matter has been settled.

Moses is a possibility for the Jets, but Mekhi Becton and they are more interested. George FantMoses could draft a tackle while under contract. Moses could find a better job elsewhere.

Quarterback is the fifth member of the “maybe” team. Joe Flacco. Saleh stated publicly that he would be vocal about Flacco's resignation, 37-year-old, who seems to have accepted the role of mentor/backup. Flacco was paid $3.5 million last season so it is reasonable to expect that Saleh wants at least that. It's possible that there will be competition as many teams are looking for a quarterback.

Agents with low priority

They should get started by resigning kicker Eddy PineiroThe 8-for-8 field goal score and the 9-for-10 extra point score were achieved by, This is a small sample but Adam Vinatieri is still a better player than his previous predecessors. The remaining players in this category are depth players who will make it to the market. The Jets will likely offer a player a contract for one year.

The group also includes a former draft pick (defensive handle). Nathan Shepherd) and 2021 free-agent additions who didn't work out for various reasons — Cole, tight end Tyler KroftCenter Dan FeeneyRunning back Tevin Coleman, linebacker Jarrad DavisSafety Lamarcus Joyner.
