New York Mets hire Joey Cora (brother of Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora) as third-base coach

The New York MetsA source confirmed that Joey Cora is the new third-base coach for the team.

Cora, older brother to Boston Red SoxAlex Cora was the third-base coach at the club for five years. Pittsburgh PiratesHe was let go at 2021’s end. He’ll be the first coach to be hired in New York under Buck Showalter who was the team’s manager just three weeks before.

The Mets retained Jeremy Hefner, their pitching coach, but they are still looking for a bench coach, hitting coach, and first-base coach.

Cora, 56, played in major league middle infield from 1987 through 1998. He was an All Star player for the Mets in late his career. After that, he transitioned to coaching. Cora started as a manager in the Mets’ minor-league system, and then spent eight years with them. Chicago White SoxUnder Ozzie Guillen, the team won a World Series in 2005 as their third-base coach. Cora was Guillen’s bench Coach with the Miami MarlinsHe interviewed for many managerial jobs in 2012 after he retired from playing.

Cora will replace Gary DiScarcina. He was dismissed in the shakeup following the firing of Luis Rojas, former Mets manager. Rojas is now in charge New York YankeesDiSarcina holds the same position as the third-base Coach Washington Nationals.
