New Zealand cancels Bledisloe cup match in Australia; home Tests against South Africa

New Zealand won the 19th consecutive Bledisloe Cup with eight attempts

Covid-19 restrictions forced New Zealand’s cancellation of their Bledisloe Cup match with Australia, as well as two home Tests against South Africa.

Bledisloe Cup test number three for the All Blacks was set for Perth on 28 August. They were to play host to South Africa 25 September and 2 Oct.

Australia will not be hosted by New Zealand’s women’s team.

Australia was set to take on the Black Ferns in Christchurch on 26/09/09, just one day after South Africa faced the All Blacks in Dunedin. The Black Ferns also had to play at Eden Park 2/10/10 as part of the double header against the men’s side.

New Zealand Rugby (NZR), stated that “the decision was taken following advice from Government that Springboks or Wallaroos wouldn’t be able enter New Zealand in order to play the matches because of Covid-19 travel restrictions.”

Mark Robinson, NZR’s chief executive, said that “we share the disappointments of our fans, players, and other stakeholders, especially those in Dunedin. The sold-out 100th test between South Africa, All Blacks, and South Africa was looking up to be a very special occasion.”

“But, we have had discussions with Government and it has become clear that Covid-19 travel restrictions made it impossible to transport the South African and Wallaroos Squads into New Zealand. This is why we know how vitally important it is to ensure the safety and health of New Zealanders.”
