The Thursday game

A standout performerPatriots QB Cam Newton8 passes, 1 touchdown, 0 intercept

Cam NewtonHe made the most definitive statement that he won’t be giving up his job as starting quarterback, going 8 of 9 for 103 yards over three drives. Newton was as relaxed as he has been in his Patriot days, even against Eagles second-string defense. His 28-yard touchdown to receiver made Newton look as at home as a Patriot. Jakobi MeyersMeyers followed him, and he gave Meyers a hand signal prior to the snap. This was his way of indicating his intent. It shows a QB/WR who are operating at peak efficiency, from a presnap communication perspective. Meanwhile Mac JonesThere were some highlights, including his 17-play, 91 yard first drive that took up 9:04 on the clock. Jones was 13 of 19 for 146 yards in four drives. — Mike Reiss

Rookie receiver DeVonta SmithMade his preseason debut with two catches of 19 yards and four targets. Smith’s ability to move well and not being impeded by his left MCL injury that prevented him from practicing for 2 weeks was more significant than any stat line. Smith caught his second catch on the evening. He started in the inside and hit the brakes before he cut back to the cornerback. Michael JacksonSmith was able to show his Heisman Trophy-winning qualities for the reception at a distance of 10 yards. Smith was slow to shake off the rust. Smith started Smith’s night with two drops and two passes that were not perfect. Joe FlaccoWho started as a patient with an illness? Jalen HurtsSmith was a smooth player and the games progressed. The game opened pretty regularly. It was an excellent warmup to the regular season opener against Smith. Atlanta FalconsOn September 12,Tim McManus
