NHL contender tier rankings at the quarter mark of 2021-22 season

Final weekend of the NHL’s 2021-22 season saw it reach quarter-finale. This means that we still have a long way to go. However, it also means that we now have some insight into which groups are flourishing, which are in decline, and which are simply baffled.

The Stanley Cup contender tiers are listed below — from “Tasting The Cup”, to “The Shane Wright Stuff” — at the quarter-mark:

You can soar to:
Tasting the Cup | On the cusp
Waiting for help | Dethroned champs
Contender-pretenders | Delusions of grandeur
Need more time | When’s the draft?

Enjoy the Cup Tier

Carolina Hurricanes
Colorado Avalanche
Edmonton Oilers
Florida Panthers
Toronto Maple Leafs

These six groups are what have impressed me the most. They aren’t perfect. They do not have every problem. Any of them could raise the Stanley Cup in a matter of months and I wouldn’t be shocked.

OK, I may still be shocked if it had been the Maple Leafs. The Stanley Cup is given for excellence after the primary spherical, unless they modify the format.

The only problem with the Hurricanes is their energy play (fifteenth). However, in all other cases they appear to be a deep and proficient group that may just shut down opponents when required. Ten of their fifteen wins have seen Carolina surrender one or less goals. It is an a Rod Brind’Amour group. It will outwork your efforts.

The Connor McDavid Leon DraisaitlDraisaitl gets the top billing or is Draisaitl present? — led the Oilers to the NHL’s highest factors percentage (.750) through 20 video games. they’re more than a two-man teamThis season. They will likely add a goaltender at some point in the future.

Many believed that the Florida Panthers were going to collapse after Joel Quenneville quit following the Blackhawks’ investigation into sexual assault. Instead, they have gone 8-4-3 under interim coach Andrew Brunettethey will roll offensively (3.73 targets per sport) as a result of the Quenneville programs. They have also Sergei BobrovskyAfter two seasons as a financial boondoggle, you can now participate at a.930 saving percentage clip. GM Invoice Zito’s team is a strong and competent group that has been the first true Cup contender in the franchise’s history.

Although we have our moments of pleasure with the Leafs they appear to be an excellent defensive group below. Sheldon KeefeWith a goalie in Jack CampbellWho knows, he might have made it onto the U.S. Olympic team. The locals will still care about their postseason success, making the Auston Matts Leafs somewhat like the preCup Alex Ovechkin Capitals. Keep in mind that Toronto has been a “mess” for a while and that the only solution was to sell off its key gamers. Yeah, that was Oct. 24.

Because they are the Avalanche, I’m here with them. They posted a.639 percentage with Nathan MacKinnon(8 video games) and defenseman Devon ToewsThe season’s first quarter was lacking in nine video games. Even though the team has lost a few key players, I am still not impressed with their forward depth. I don’t think the goaltending is at a champion level. But, again, it’s still the Avalanche. They are a Cup favorite until they are not.

At the cusp tier

Calgary Flames
Minnesota Wild
New York Rangers
Winnipeg Jets

The NHL Awards Watch will be running on Friday. It is difficult to believe that Darryl Sutter, who has been reworked by the Flames, is not going to be a frontrunner for the Jack Adams Award. They’re the NHL’s most productive defensive group (1.95 opposing goals per sport), a possession beast (55.1% Corsi per proportion) and a productive offensive team (3.23 objectifs per sport). Jacob Markstrom is the one who has made the comparison to Sutter’s Kings’ championship teams. Jonathan QuickNumbers for 2012 (.938 save ratio, 1.75 goals-against-common).

Does the Central Division’s Wild belong in the highest Tier? But, I’m unable to travel there. Their goaltending is ranked twenty-third in the league by save percentage (.903). They are falling back into the same rut as last season, when their defensive metrics (fifth for anticipated objectives against at 5-on-5) outperform their traditional defensive stats (nineteenth for objectives against per sport). This is not a good formula.

Rangers fans have told me they’re more than just goaltending. Igor Shesterkin. It is an odd defensiveness that a goalie who was a member of a higher-ranking franchise gets carried. They have a lower puck possession than last season, give up more pictures and are less likely to score at 5-on-5 than they were in the previous season. They are often successful but they have three key difference-makers. Artemi Panarin, Adam FoxShesterkin.

The Jets are a fantastic 5-on-5 group, compared to their respective groups. They are tenth in the NHL’s anticipated objectives percentage (52.5%) and sixth in 5-on-5 shot makes an attempt (62.65) respectively. Their energy play is twenty-first (16.9%), and their penalty kill (68.9%), is twenty-second (22.22). This is after 22 games. Although I thought about putting them in a lower tier, it is somewhat recency biased. They’ve Connor Hellebuyck. They are going to be of excellent quality.

Ready to reinforce tier

Boston Bruins
Pittsburgh Penguins
Tampa Bay Lightning
Vegas Golden Knights

All four of these groups could contend for a championship or, in the case of Lightning, for a third straight one. They are all ready for reinforcements. The Penguins are getting Evgeni MalkinAfter a knee surgery, he was back to full strength and played again quickly. Lightning were with out Nikita KucherovSince Oct. 16 and are currently lacking Brayden PointYou can also play in the interim. After all, the Golden Knights are available for. Jack EichelTo recover from his disk surgery and make his debut in the franchise. They have shirts ready and everything.

For the Bruins,… Tuukka RaskHis recovery from an offseason hip operation is on schedule. Many Boston fans are eager for his return. However, he is an unlimited free agent but has said he would be willing to play for. “$250,000 and tons of Bud Lights.”There are no clear decisions regarding the implications of the wage caps. While his return might be helpful, Boston has proven to be a team with more lineup challenges than anyone who is in purpose.

Champions tier dethroned

St. Louis Blues
Washington Capitals

After being thirteenth in the final season (2.98), the 2019 Stanley Cup champions have a.614 factor proportion. They are sixth in objectives per sports (3.32) and sixth in factors percentage. Doug Armstrong, GM of the Stanley Cup champions, has to love the truth about his offensive leaders.Jordan Kyrou Robert Thomas), a veteran star who wished out however did not go (Vladimir Tarasenko) and another person’s salary-cap casualty (Pavel Buchnevich). St. Louis is a great story, but it sure isn’t the only one. Jordan BinningtonTo write the final chapters of the playoffs, where he has misplaced his last 9 video games.

Alex OvechkinFor the 2018 Stanley Cup champs, he has 19 objectives in 23 videogames. That places him on pace to accomplish 68 objectives. The Capitals have the highest odds of making the playoffs (96.7%) despite having not played this season without heart. Nicklas BackstromThe injured hip is out. Peter Laviolette is proud to have his Jack Adams case, judging by the manner in which Washington has emerged from the gate.

play

1:49

Because the Capitals defeated the Panthers 4-3, Alex Ovechkin increases his season purpose count to 18.

Tier for pretenders and contenders

Anaheim Ducks
Columbus Blue Jackets
Dallas Stars
Nashville Predators
San Jose Sharks

What was the last time that the Geese were so fun? Iceland in the 1994 Junior Goodwill Games? Troy TerryHas 14 objectives Trevor ZegrasThey are selling circus passes and their videogames have an average rating six objectives. They had a six-game losing streak followed by an eight-game winning streak. Anaheim is the only team that I know of, but they were the group that managed to get both their veterans and younger players on the same path in the first quarter.

A former Blue Jackets fan became a season-ticket holder Brandon DubinskyThe group’s stunning early success is due to these people, believes the players finding their smilesJohn Tortorella reportedly kept them in a safe under his desk after he made the discovery. This group has moved up offensively from being thirtieth last season (2.39 goals per sport) to being seventh this season (3.25). Buying Jakub VoracekLetting and buying Zach WerenskiFlying his offensive freak flag is two causes. Perhaps Torts shifting forward is one cause. Maybe that’s how a group performs when they have less-than-no expectations from anyone.

As much as possible, we are trying to avoid recency bias here… but hoo-boy have the Stars been on a heater. After being shellacked in Minnesota on November 18, the Stars have won five consecutive games. The wins came against four groups that rank higher here. These wins saw the Stars surrender six goals, while they averaged 3.6 goals per sport. This is what the Stars can offer you at their best. At their best, they appear to be a playoff team this season.

Extra stunning is the fact that the Nashville Predators have an incredible 72% chance of creating the Stanley Cup Playoffs while they are still playing. Matt DucheneIs their primary goal-scorer on one of the most elite strains in hockey? Duchene is the main goal-scorer on top-level hockey. Mikael Granlund(25 in 22 games) Filip Forsberg(15 elements in 13 video games). The Preds are known for their ability to perform well over long periods of time. Juuse SarosHis run last season was concluded with a.922 save percentage.

Logan CoutureAn earlier season, he informed me that the Sharks’ defensive game was significantly better than in 2020-21. It was like a welcome mat to shot attempts against porous goaltending. He’s right: San Jose moved from being twenty-fiveth in expected objectives against last season to being ninth this season. They’re healthy and getting resurgent performances of gamers like Timo MeierIt’s healthy, and it’s not unhealthy to goaltend.

Flyers are their own tier. They are unable to rating because they have no energy play. In the midst a seven-game losing streak, their protection and puck possession have completely collapsed. Should Alain Vigneault and his contract, which runs through 2023-24, be terminated? What would it have to do with the Metro Division’s 8-9-4 group? It’s a strange group.

The illusion of grandeur tier

Chicago Blackhawks
New York Islanders
Seattle Kraken
Vancouver Canucks

A headline in the Chicago Solar-Instances had not too long ago. “Blackhawks’ path to playoff contention looks plausible but difficult,”This falls squarely under “I am not saying Ana de Armas will date me, but …” territory. They’re now 6-2-0 in equity since. Derek KingAlthough Rodman was promoted to interim coach, he did not have a rebound in Chicago like the one that the Blackhawks hoped for.

After tripping on them at the initial beginning gate, the Kraken’s tentacles have finally begun to move with life. In a few games, their scoring and protection finally synchronized. Although accidents can still be a problem in the NHL, their goaltending is significantly better than the NHL-worst 0.874 save percentage that they achieved in 22 videogames. They are 12.7% likely to make the playoffs. They have a “let’s see who this group really is” stretch of seven living video games in nine games, as well as taking part in Oilers twice.

Both the Canucks believe that they can rally in the Pacific Division, or they have been petrified by their lack of expertise. Travis GreenJim Benning continues to be the coach and is the overall supervisor. The group has only made one commerce since July. MoneyPuck shows that they have a 6.7% chance to make the playoffs.

The New York Islanders have the same probability as the Canucks. However, if anyone has any delusions it could be them. The Isles have played 17 video games and amassed just.353 percentage. What if they are wholesome? What happens if they are able to reclaim their identity as a defensive Juggernaut, rather than a group that has a minus-20 purpose differential. What if they have a few successful streaks in their remaining 37 dwelling video games? What if? the guy who picked them to win the Stanley CupDid you find yourself not wanting to be any dumber than the speed bump in the parking area?

Cooking dinner takes a little more time

Detroit Red Wings
Los Angeles Kings
New Jersey Devils

Pink Wings was added Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider Alex NedeljkovicTheir roster and they were like “welp,” it was time to be successful again. Although a.457 percent percentage is not exactly “cancel rebuild!” Materials, but it could be their highest since the 2016-17 season when their main scorer was 15-years ago.

The Kings’ first quarter mirrors their youth movement in that they are the most moody group in the league. In six games, the Kings were unsuccessful. In seven video games, undefeated In 5 games, they were defeated. They have a 24.3% chance of making the playoffs. Drew DoughtyAgain, here’s their lineup. The Kings can still get the third slot and wild-card berths in the West, whereas the Flames and Oilers are located on their own sandbar in the Pacific.

Their latest game against the Sharks might have been the end of the Devils’ season. It was at home. It happened after a huge victory over the Flyers. It was the return Jack HughesThe lineup was awash with 4-0 leads after 40 minutes, and the Sharks were on their way to a 5-2 win. One step ahead, one step back, but on the right path — one that would still lead to a playoff berth.

The Wright stuff tier

Arizona Coyotes
Buffalo Sabres
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators

The Canadiens cleared out their front officeJeff Gorton, former Rangers GM, is the new head of the desk. Carey PriceTheir star goalie cannot turn them around, but they are on the road to winning again. Carey Value may be returning to play in the regular season, rather than the playoffs. Geoff Molson, Proprietor of the team, said he was open to rebuilding. Montreal’s perfect information is that they traded their 2022 first-round decision. Christian DvorakLottery protection was provided in drafts through which Shane Wright may be the middle man they’ve been trying to find since. Saku Koivu retired.

The Coyotes are a meticulously designed team that is expected to be the worst in the NHL this season. However, two new developments have thrown their plans into disarray: rookie goaltending and unexpectedly good goaltending. Karel VejmelkaVeteran Scott WedgewoodThe Senators managed to beat them by a ratio of.237 to 19, thanks to 19 video games.

It is difficult to rank the Sabres here because they are aggressive for 22 of their 22 games. They’ve been outscored 19 to 33 in their seven previous video games. They make it exciting, at most.

These tiers seem to be at the midway point. Keep checking…

Jersey Foul Award of the Week

Beantown:

Many people believe it is an automated Foul. However, there is an obscure Jersey Foul bylaw called the Cross-Sport Infiltration exemption. This allows hockey players to place the names and numbers for different NHL gamers on jerseys. It can be used for stealth advertising.

As far as this being an NFL Jersey Foul… we’ll leave that as much as the soccer columnists.

Three issues concerning supplemental self discipline

1. After he was given the keys, I agree with Brad Marchand’s comments. a three-game suspension by the NHLHe has worked hard to get rid of his rodentesque reputation from his early NHL years. He stated, “I see the history that I have, but I was hoping that they would see past it.”

It is historical history that repeats itself with Oliver Ekman Larsson’s slew. It’s the exact same play in the same neighborhood. as when he slew-footedDerick Brassard 2015 He has been penalized for slew footing. He was suspended and fined. According to the Division of Participant Security he was also warned about these actions. Marchand (511) has been the only left-leaning wing to have scored more than Marchand since 2015. But that doesn’t excuse him from his repeated acts that make opponents more vulnerable to harm.

2. There was a lot of “Why not P.Okay” after Marchand was suspended. Subban?” You can find out more about Subban on the internet at what-about.is. Subban does indeed use his skate and his leg for transporting opponents to the ice. This transfer was made by Trevor Zegras of Anaheim, who earned him a $15,000 high-quality for tripping. Subban was also penalized $5,000 for dangerously traveling on Milan Lucic.

Marchand used his superior physique to get Ekman Larsson over his leg. That’s a lot of foot. Subban’s actions are not identical, at least in the eyes of league officials. Subban can continue doing it, but…

3. Hockey fans often bite, which makes it difficult to convince friends who are not involved in hockey activities that the NHL does not exist. It’s like, we’re a multi-billion-dollar trade with several TV contracts and now we have Brendan Lemieux using opponents as chew toys.

It is also an issue that makes hockey fans laugh. D.J. Smith speaks about Brady Tkachuk needed a tetanus shot. Just like Brendan and Claude Lemieux turning into primary fathers and sons in the historical past to have high-profile biting incidents.Like this Participant Security Video that featured the now-iconic line “This is not a hockey play.”

Weekly winners and losers

Winner: Lucas Raymond

What a rookie for Pink Wings! In the beginning, the Swedes had him removed from their 55-player Olympic list. They soon realized what they had done. According to AftonbladetThey are asking the IIHF for an exception to allow them to add him.

Losers: NHL on Olympics

The positive COVID-19 inspections are on the rise. Five NHL video games have been delayed. As we all know, the homeowners do not want gamers to travel to Beijing because they don’t want their season to be interrupted. We hear more and more gamers complaining about the Olympic restrictions. They are often worried about China’s quarantine implications. I remain optimistic about NHL participation in the 2022 Olympics. However, I am an optimist by nature regardless of whether I rise up in New Jersey.

Auston Matthews is the winner

Matthews’ hat trick against the Avalanche is a big winner. He is a winner because of this transfer. Principally, he is a winner due to his momentary powers and invisibility. That is the reason why he is the best scorer of his technology being so wide open on the doorstep.

Losers of Mustache Lovers

Farewell, good friend. Until the next Movember.

Jack Hughes was the winner

Jack Hughes isn’t a millionaire. He would say it, considering he played in 120 video games and 55 factors over the course of three seasons. But he is the franchise. The Devils want their first general in 2019 to be a star player on the ice. They want him to be the man that recruits new generations to the Devils off the Ice. They want him to be the man who drafts his brother Luke. It doesn’t matter what he “earned”. It is what he means for their future that matters. Jack Hughes is, hopefully, that man.

Jake DeBrusk is the loser

After seeing his ice time drop for the second consecutive season in Boston, the Bruins’ winger felt compelled to ask for commerce. It is a good idea to feel sorry for him. His identity was mentioned in commerce rumors every year, but was never dealt. He is now asking for a woman and his future lies in the hands of the Bruins. His commerce request was made public by some followers this week, and they booed him. It was a very distressing experience for the participant.

Winner: Hats

After creating a jersey that read “JERSEY”, the Devils listened to our suggestion and created a hat with “HAT.” It remains sold out.

Loser: Zach Hyman’s hat trick

It was a huge disappointment. Hyman thought he had his first NHL goal-scoring hat trick against Penguins, but it was taken away by an offside evaluation. Connor McDavid then had the opportunity to pass the puck to Hyman, but Hyman was defended. Hyman stated that McDavid had no chance of getting it to Hyman. He was instructed to place the puck in, stop the sport and we’ll get another one each other.
