NHL playoff watch standings updates

There are often a lot of NHL games on a given night, many of which have major impacts on the playoff races.

There are also nights like tonight. Tonight, three of four teams will be going to the draft lottery and one team is eight points ahead of the club below. (And we don't blame them either. All four of these teams made it to the playoffs last season.

In any case, it is a good time to look at the top prospects for teams near the bottom of standings and on the draft lottery board.

No. 1. on most draft boards, including TSN's Bob McKenzie Craig ButtonAlong with SportsnetShane Wright, Kingston Frontenacs centre. The Burlington, Ontario native was granted the sixth “exceptional player” status in the OHL. He was able to join the league a year earlier than the rest (joining the likes John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad Connor McDavid). As Wright told our Greg Wyshynski in the fallHe models his game more after Patrice BergeronWhile not as prolific in scoring, this type of player would be an asset to any team that chooses No. 1.

Another center finds himself at the top of many rankings (and the very top in those by) Chris Peters of Daily FaceoffLogan Cooley is the U.S. under-18 national team (NTDP). Cooley can also be used as a center and is a player most lottery teams would like to have. Peters wrote, “Cooley is all about speed. His speed is extraordinary and he troubles his peers' defenders. His ability to navigate through traffic, and find areas of soft ground before the opposing team knows it, can make him an offensive threat. He can also burn the opposition in transition.

Juraj Slafkovsky (Slovak winger) is another prospect from North America. He has been working for TPS Liiga in Finland this season. Apart from his professional playing there, he also suited up for Slovakia in the Olympics. Slovakia took home a bronze and MVP medals. We know that current NHL players were not able to participate in the Beijing Games. However, a lot ex-NHL players participated, along with a few elite players from NCAA hockey, and other pro leagues.

These are just three players of the 224 that will be selected for this year's draft. The broadcast will air on ESPN networks July 7 and 8.

As we reach the final stretch in the 2021-22 regular season it's time check in on all the playoff race — and the teams jockeying to position in the NHL draft lottery in 2022.

The No. The No. 1 pick

The NHL uses a draft lottery as a way to determine the order of play in the first round. Therefore, the No. 1 pick is not guaranteed for the team that finishes last. 1 selection. A team can move up to a maximum of 10 places if it wins the lottery. Only 11 teams are eligible to participate in the draw for the No. 1 pick. Full details on the process can be found here.

Notes about conditionally traded picks that impact the top 16

  • Chicago will pick Columbus's first-round selection if Chicago doesn’t win one of the two 2022 draft lottery draws. Otherwise, the pick is deferred to 2023.

  • If Buffalo isn't among the top 10 picks, Vegas will get Buffalo's first-round selection. If it is not in the top 10, then the pick will be deferred to 2023.
