Canada gets NHL’s new sports betting deals

Following the launch of single-game regulated sports betting in Ontario, Canada, new multi-year NHL deals were made with BetMGM and FanDuel.

FanDuel, BetMGM and FanDuel became the NHL’s official betting partners in 2018. FanDuel was also named the League’s exclusive daily fantasy partner. The partnership has now been extended to Canada, which legalized sports wagering last summer.

They’ll be able to use official NHL branding in legal jurisdictions throughout Canada and the United States. They’ll continue to be provided with custom content via NHL-controlled media channels. FanDuel created the NHL Network’s first ever Odds Ticker.

“Canada’s sports betting landscape offers tremendous opportunities to further fan engagement, continue our progressive approach with sports gaming,” stated Keith Wachtel (NHL Chief Business Officer and Senior Vice President). “BetMGM & FanDuel were our initial partners in U.S. sports betting. We’re delighted to expand our partnerships and engage our Canadian fan base as we make our transformative entry in this market in Canada.

Bill C-218, which was introduced in June 2021 to remove the federal ban against sports betting in Canada, was passed. Parlay betting, which allowed wagering on multiple sports at once, was not legal in Canada. Horse racing and parlay betting were also legal. The bill permitted single-game sports betting as well as futures betting. This allowed you to predict which team will win the championship.

Ontario was the first province to regulate sports wagering. On April 4, 13 apps started taking single-game event bets. According to the CBC, single-game legalized wagering could bring in $800 million this year.
