Gabby Cantorna kept scoreboard ticking with penalties to take USA 16-0 up, but Australia came within touching distance of overcoming the deficit with converted attempts by Georgina Friedrichs & Ashley Masters.
The series ends on Saturday, with New Zealand hosting against the USA and Canada facing Australia.
