Smith-Schuster is on IR depuis Oct. 16, after sustaining a shoulder injury in a match against the Denver BroncosIn Week 5, and underwent surgery the following week.

He posted on social media after the surgery that he would miss the remainder of the regular season. However, Smith-Schuster spoke with ESPN last month and acknowledged that there was a possibility that he could be back this season.

Smith-Schuster replied Dec. 7, “AFC Championship or Super Bowl,” when Smith-Schuster was asked when and if he would return. “Either one works well for me.

“There is a chance that I might be able to come back and take part in (the AFC Championship). This is where I am right now. I try to make it as easy as possible, and am rehabbing every day. You never know what you might find.”

Smith-Schuster stated that the probability of Smith-Schuster returning was 5% at the time. But, opening the practice window it appears that the odds of Smith-Schuster playing again this season are much higher — possibly as early Sunday’s Wild Card against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith-Schuster will become a free agent once again in the offseason. He has signed a one year deal with the Steelers to play for the 2021 seasons. However, Smith-Schuster told ESPN that he doesn’t rule out staying in Pittsburgh.

Smith-Schuster stated that free agency is possible because she has experienced it. “I believe mentally that I will be completely fine. It’s a new market. It will all play out in March or February.

The Steelers remain a top priority. But it all depends on how they move their pieces and who they bring in. Who’s the future? They still have to go find guys and pay them. It’s still a top concern.
