Rugby World Cup: Spain wins for the first-time since 1999

Spain celebrate with a sign saying Rugby World Cup 2023 qualified
Spain currently ranks 15th in the world.

Spain will make its first appearance at the men’s Rugby World Cup in 24 Years after qualifying for the 2023 tournament.

Spain’s win against Portugal of 33 to 28 was enough to make it the second European qualifier, following confirmation of Georgia’s place on Thursday.

Russia’s ban from qualificationFrance was a place Georgia could compete.

Spain will take on Ireland, Scotland and South Africa in Pool B. Also, an unconfirmed Asia Pacific qualifier will be played.

1999 was the side’s only World Cup appearance by a man. They lost all three of their pool matches.

Santiago Santos, Spain’s head coach, said that it was a difficult journey.

“We lost the first three games, but then we won six consecutively.” The team performed admirably and we are excited to go to the Rugby World Cup.
