Garoppolo was allowed to attend team practices and meetings, but he refused to go due to the fear that he would be playing elsewhere.
However, Garoppolo was able to stay in San Francisco for several weeks and that didn’t change. Shanahan said, “To me it seemed like everyone was just waiting on us to cut them so they could figure out how much they could get him for.” Jimmy believed this was the best thing for him. It’s a much better situation for the Niners, and that’s why we were so excited.
Jimmy understood that there was a salary cap, as well as the need for Trey to support him in a backup role. It was clear to us that that would work for Trey. We didn’t believe that such a thing was possible. It turned out that it was. So, it ended up being a win-win situation for both parties.
Garoppolo was a positive for the Niners. It improved their backup situation for Lance, who has only started two NFL regular-season games. The Niners are now 35-16 with Shanahan starting in 2017 (includes the postseason), and 8-28 when Garoppolo starts, as compared to any other signal caller.

The 49ers also have the option to trade Garoppolo, should another team need a starting quarterback before the Nov. 1, trade deadline. Garoppolo’s contract includes a no trade clause. This means that any deal would need to be attractive enough to him.
Garoppolo sees it as the chance to remain in a place he knows and has had success in, while also helping other teams to rehabilitate his value before he enters free agency. It eliminated Garoppolo’s chances of Garoppolo moving to a new situation where there are many variables that could make it difficult for him to land in a good position in 2023.
Garoppolo was also able to take a longer time frame to heal his right shoulder.
Lynch stated, “While doctors cleared him with all restrictions, there was an additional caveat that it might be smart to, to really build up him.” He was able to focus on his training and not rush for the field. Sometimes things just happen and it is easier to work in a controlled environment.

The Niners have a plan to get Garoppolo to practice immediately. Shanahan acknowledged that Garoppolo would be Lance’s backup in the Sept. 11 season opener. Chicago Bears Purdy was the No. 3.
Shanahan stated Tuesday that he spoke with Lance about Garoppolo’s return before the move was made. Lance was “great” about it, and had “no issues with it at all.” The Niners hope Lance and Garoppolo can work well together in this season’s role-reversal.
There is no way to know how it will turn out if Lance fails and Garoppolo waits in the wings. Shanahan reiterated Tuesday, that Lance is part of this team and that he will be able to learn from his mistakes.
Shanahan stated, “We feel very strongly about giving the keys to Trey.” We were excited about what that could do to our team. We’re thrilled for everything he did and all the opportunities that he presented throughout the season. I cannot wait to get him on the team in week 1. Because we have a backup quarterback, Jimmy makes us feel good. He wasn’t available to everyone in the league and I am so grateful that he was still available.
