Seattle Mariners Ken Giles is designated for assignment

“A lot more guys have stepped in and done a great work,” Servais noted. “Opportunity-wise maybe not there, but Ken was seeking the opportunity. … He would love to pitch in the major leagues and we don’t have that chance for him.”

Giles made his Mariners debut in June 21st. He had six strikeouts as well as four walks, and he tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings in five appearances. Giles started the season on the injured roster after sustaining a right-hand middle finger strain in spring training.

Giles signed a deal with the Mariners that included a $500,000 signing Bonus and salaries of $1million last year and $5million this season. Seattle had a $9.5million option for 2023, with a $500,000 buyout.

After only pitching in four games in Toronto, Tommy John surgery was performed in September 2020. He was able to save 23 runs and have a 1.87 ERA through 53 games with the Blue Jays in 2019. In 2019, he had 83 strikes and only 17 walks over 53 innings.

Giles was a Houston Astros pitcher in 2017. He had 34 saves in 2017 and a 2.70 ERA during 63 games.

Giles has a career record of 14-18 in eight major league seasons, including stints with Philadelphia, Houston and Toronto. He also has a 2.71 ERA and 115 saves. He has 484 hits and 114 walks over 355 1/3 innings.
