It was not immediately clear what the extent of this trade package would be.
Castillo, a right-hander aged 29 years old, is considered the best trade market pitcher. He is 4-4 in 14 Reds starts with a 2.86 ERA. Castillo also has a 3.62 ERA over six seasons in Cincinnati.
Castillo will not be eligible for free agency after the 2023 season. The Mariners would therefore have him for the remainder of this year.
Castillo has recovered from a disappointing 2021 season that saw him lose 16 games and walk a record 75 batters. Castillo’s best pitch has been his changeup for most of his career. But this year, he is actually throwing more of his four-seam speedball and having a lot of success doing so. Castillo has had opponents whiff on 39% of his swings against his fourseamer. This is the highest rate in Castillo’s entire career, and the highest among major league pitchers (minimum 300 fourseamers).
