Super Bowl LVI will have Ronald Torbert as the lead referee

The NFL announced Tuesday that Ronald Torbert will be the Super Bowl LVI’s referee.

Torbert joined the NFL as a side-jude in 2010. He was promoted to referee by the NFL in 2014. Since 2010, Torbert has been the official referee for six playoff matches, including two in the wild card round and four in the divisional. He was most recently the official referee for the the San Francisco 49ersLast Sunday’s victory over the Green Bay Packers.

All Super Bowl officiating assignments in the NFL are merit-based.

Torbert’s average regular-season crew averaged 12.3 Flags per Game — fourth-lowest of the 17 league teams. But he will work in the Super Bowl with a new collection of officials, all of whom have met the NFL’s experience and evaluation criteria.

• Line judge: Carl Johnson

• Field judge: Rick Patterson

• Side judge: Keith Washington

• Back judge: Scott Helverson
