1. McDaniels factorAfter one of the Patriots’-winning plays, there was an important “what could be” moment.EaglesLast week, Josh McDaniels (New England offensive coordinator) and Howie Rosenman (executive vice-president and general manager of Philadelphia) were discussing practices.
Before this offseason, Roseman was searching for Doug Pederson’s successor as Eagles coach. They had never met before. McDaniels, who was also a finalist in Roseman’s job offer, would now be in his first stint as a coach. This is what he still hopes to achieve.
McDaniels, however, returned to the Patriots for McDaniels’ 18th season and his 10th consecutive year as the Patriots’ coordinator. The Eagles did not hire McDaniels because he was too important to be O-coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and no one is closer than Jones.
“No. 1. He’s a wonderful person, he relates well with players but, in terms of his abilities as a coach one of his greatest strengths is his ability teach,” stated Matt Cassel (long-time NFL quarterback), who credits McDaniels and his time with the Patriots (2005 to 2008) for helping to lay the groundwork for his 14-year-long career. Some guys can watch a play but don’t know enough to describe it and teach the concepts behind it. This is why you are doing this check.

Cassel is a favorite analyst at NBC Sports Boston. “My first year was my second. I spent a full offseason with Josh.” He would create drills unlike any other I have ever seen. I would be asked to call out plays within a time limit of just two minutes. As we worked down the field, he would say to me, “We’ve got a second and six, what’s your favorite here?” He’d say, ‘We have a second-and-6. What do you like here?’ We would work down the field until we reached the red zone. We’d work all the way down to the red zone and it was ‘What are your top two red zone calls? You can think more about football situational, the reasons you call plays, your preferred plays. It also allows him to see what you enjoy.

The Giants are likely to host one preseason match next year and will visit the Patriots for the 2022 preseason finale. Both teams plan to practice in East Rutherford beforehand.
