Washington Commanders’ Antonio Gandy Golden, 2020 draft selection, is retiring at 24

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders tight end Antonio Gandy-Golden Thursday’s retirement from football marks the end of a short career that began in 2020 as a fourth-round selection.

Gandy Golden, 24, told Ron Rivera (Washington coach) about his plans for the practice at 9 a.m. Rivera heard from him that he wants to return to college and complete his education. He played football at Liberty University while majoring in graphic design.

Gandy-Golden was drafted by Washington two years ago in the hope that he would become the top receiving target. His rookie season was interrupted by injuries and the pandemic. Due to a hamstring strain, he spent eight weeks on injured reserve. He was able to catch one pass for 22 yards and one catch for 3 yards.

Washington released him last season in its final cuts, but signed him to practice squad. He made it to the active roster, playing 20 snaps in just four games. Washington promoted him to tight end this offseason. He was hoped that he would be able to assist in the passing game by serving as a receiving tightend.

Rivera said, “He was doing an excellent job.” Rivera said that Rivera was seeing his potential and making progress in OTA and minicamp. This was a man we felt could be a matchup issue for us, so I was slightly surprised.”

Rivera stated that he felt Gandy-Golden was losing his passion for the game.

Rivera said, “That’s exactly what it sounded.” He just didn’t feel the need to right now. He wanted to finish his education, and discover what else is available.

“Because I think he’s bright young man, I believe that he has bright future.”
