A number of PlayStation Studios were asked by God of War Director to make their games available on PC

Cory Barlog, Sony Santa Monica’s creative director, has revealed that God of War was launched on PC by many of PlayStation Studios. This helped convince Sony that it was a good idea to bring the most exclusive PlayStation games to PC.

Barlog, who was game director on 2018’s God of War, was asked what insights he had into Sony’s decision for a stronger focus on the PC marketplace.

Barlog stated that he believed it was the collective of studios across the country saying that this was a great idea. We should look into this. It reached that tipping point eventually. When we had sent so many suggestion box suggestions that they were like, ‘I’m tired of hearing all this. Fine, we’ll do this.’ It’s a process. We’re still figuring it out as a company and as individual studios how to do this and what the process and strategy will be.”

The push by Sony into the PC market started in 2020 when the company announced it would bring Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition to the platform. Other Sony games, such as Death Stranding, had been published or funded by Sony. However, Horizon was an exclusive PlayStation Studios title that would not be available elsewhere.

Sony released Days Gone on PC after Horizon and will soon make Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection accessible to PC players in the early 2022.

Barlog doesn’t want to make a decision on God of War Ragnarok and says that Sony will ultimately decide if the sequel arrives in less than the four-years it took to make the original.

Barlog stated, “I don’t know.” “Right now, we’re taking it one game at a time, kind of looking at each one and determining, ‘Okay, is this the best thing?’ And we’ll gauge how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Was there anything that we could have done better? If we do it again, what can we do to improve? But at the end of the day, ultimately, it’s Sony’s decision.”

We are hopeful Ragnarok will make it to PC. In our God of War PC performance evaluation, we stated that “this PC port offers some nice upgrades over the PS4 Pro launch, it scales well and although it is impactful on hardware it does offer you the option of increasing resolution, quality and frame rates and even aspect ratios over what PlayStation consoles provide.”
