After the acquisition of Activision, Activision won’t remove existing games from PlayStation.

Activision Blizzard confirms that it won’t remove existing PlayStation games after it was acquired by Xbox. This means that Call of Duty: Warzone will appear to remain multiplatform.

The news comes from an employee Q&A filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. When asked how Activision Blizzard’s deal with Xbox would impact existing partnership agreements, the company replied, “We will honour all existing commitments after close.” Like Microsoft’s acquisition Minecraft, we don’t intend to remove any content on platforms where it is currently available.

The hugely popular game Minecraft remained on PlayStation consoles after Microsoft acquired Mojang developer Minecraft. It can still be played there today. However, Minecraft was added to Xbox Game Pass for PC and console. Microsoft already announced that it will bring as many Activision games to the Xbox Game Pass service after the integration.

Microsoft adopted a similar approach when it acquired Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax in 2013. Dishonored and other games can still be bought on PlayStation’s digital store, but the series has also been transferred to Game Pass where it adds to the service’s value.

Although Microsoft is yet to unveil which Activision Blizzard IPs it plans to convert into Xbox exclusives, Bethesda’s upcoming release of Starfield – which will debut later this year as an Xbox console exclusive – could signal that PlayStation fans are set to miss out on further content in the years to come.

It remains to be seen what this means for Activision’s highly profitable Call of Duty franchise. Activision Blizzard stated that Call of Duty: Warzone remains an ongoing product and that it won’t be removed from PlayStation 3 in the near future.

This statement does not necessarily apply to future Call of Duty releases. These titles would theoretically not be available on existing platforms. The possibility exists that while Warzone is free to play on PlayStation, new Call of Duty entries could be made available for Xbox via Game Pass. This would increase the appeal of the Xbox versions.
