Battlefield 2042 currently hosts fewer concurrent players than Battlefield 1, 4 or 5.

SteamDB data shows that Battlefield 2042 has had a maximum number of 2,090 players online within the last 24 hours. That compares with 2,195 in Battlefield 4 and 7,498 in Battlefield 1. Battlefield 5 saw 21,709 players, while Battlefield 5 had 2,195. Battlefield 4 came out in 2013. This is a sign of how troubled this latest installment has been.

Battlefield 2042 has seen a gradual decline in popularity since its November release. It now holds less than 2% market share, having reached its peak of 105.397 players in November. The game even saw a decrease in play during the December weekend.

The game had a very turbulent development, both before and during its launch. It was first realized in September, when its release date was moved back one month. However, there were still many issues in Battlefield 2042’s initial launch and they continued to be a problem when it was officially released.

It quickly became one the most disliked Steam games, despite its popularity. Players complained about missing features and voiced their dissatisfaction on the subreddit, which was threatened with being shut down by moderators.

Battlefield 2042’s Season One (essentially the Battle Pass) was delayed between February and Summer 2022 by DICE. Instead of focusing on more pressing issues, such as adding a scoreboard to online games, DICE decided to delay this update for a few days.

Publisher EA also admitted that Battlefield 2042 didn’t meet expectations. Soon after, a petition was started online asking for refunds. More than 220,000 players now have signed the petition.

DICE stated at the start of March that it was aware there were several problems with its map design. It also said that it understood why the game was called a “walking sim”. Kaleidoscope will first fix the maps, but it won’t be until the summer.
