The rumoured Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – expected to be the franchise’s 2022 release – has reportedly entered an early alpha stage, with the game apparently being developed by 11 different studios.
Activison Blizzard is yet to confirm a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, but there are several reports that this has been confirmed since September.
Tom Henderson, an industry insider, first reported about Modern Warfare 2’s existence. He said that three Infinity Ward Studios are working on it alongside Treyarch. Activision. Raven, Sledgehammer. Demonware. High Moon Studios. Toys for Bob.
Henderson said in a YouTube clip (reported by Dualshockers) “[The large number of studios involved]This shouldn’t be cause for concern, as most studios have been involved in Call of Duty titles over the past few years. Modern Warfare 2 seems to be running smoothly based on everything I’ve heard.
“Some developers even said that the Modern Warfare’s current build was in alpha. This is my opinion based on all of my own experiences.
Henderson stated that Modern Warfare 2 footage was also seen by him and that it “did look really good.” [into] its development stage.”
The campaign will feature U.S. Special Forces fighting Colombian Drug Cartels and is internally codenamed Project Cortez.
IGN called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ‘great’, stating that the game’s “various gameplay modes and outstanding gunplay indicate that the series is on a promising path.” It also sold well in commercial terms, setting multiple sales records at release.
If the upcoming release is official, it should not be confused with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was released in 2009. It was remastered in 2020. Infinity Ward’s 2019 Call of Duty revived Modern Warfare’s franchise. The studio is again in charge of the game as per the franchise’s three-year development cycles.
Call of Duty 2022 would be the first of three Call of Duty entries that will be released as multiplatform titles after the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Xbox. After that, Xbox may make the series an exclusive first-party title. Activision may drop the annual releases of the series, so this could take longer than expected.
