Every Nintendo Game in Development


Just passed Wii’sThe lifetime total of sales Nintendo Switch is now the company’s best-selling home console of all time. It’s the fastest home console to pass 100 million units sold, and according to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, Switch is still in the middle of its lifecycle.

A major factor in the system’s longevity has been its steady stream of first-party games, from Nintendo’s launch-day masterpiece Breath of WildIn 2017, to its reinvention in 2022 of a beloved franchise Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

This console will soon be entering its sixth anniversary. Nintendo has not stopped supporting it: latest Nintendo Direct, we know of 14 Nintendo games* currently in development.

To give Switch owners a better idea of what to expect in the months ahead, we’ve compiled those games in the list below, ordered by release date. You can scroll down or click through the gallery to see a complete rundown of all Nintendo games currently in development as of February 2022.

*There's some wiggle room when it comes to what is and isn't a “Nintendo game,” and we're not covering all Switch exclusives. Instead, we have included Nintendo games they consider to be Nintendo products. Although technically Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope has been published by Ubisoft it is not a title that Mario plays. It feels absurd to remove a Mario-starring game from the list. While Triangle Strategy may be released on Octopath Traveler and other platforms, Nintendo regards it as a key asset for Switch. Anything that does not meet these criteria (such older games being rereleased via Nintendo Switch Online), is not included.

Triangle Strategy

Triangle Strategy, the next tactical RPG “HD-2D” from Square and Nintendo, follows the outstanding Octopath Traveler in 2018. The art style is unique and places pixelated character characters in 3D environments that have “modern effects”.

Triangle Strategy features over 20 character options. This strategy allows you to control a group of soldiers through an international conflict and its aftermath. You'll also be making narrative-affecting decisions that affect the storyline based on utility and morality. The culmination of your decisions “make up Serenoa’s worldview and influence who will join [your party].”

Square Enix producer Tomoya Asano is also involved in Triangle Strategy.

You can now access a Triangle Strategy demo to allow you to play through Chapter 3 before its March 4 release. (Progress will be carried over if the full game is purchased.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Nintendo’s next big first-party release, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, takes everyone’s favorite pink puffball on an open-world adventure through an abandoned, overgrown city.

The Forgotten Land features the series’ signature gameplay, allowing Kirby to inhale enemies and objects to copy their abilities — though this time around, Kirby's able to suck down CompleteMachines for vending Vehicles.

For those who want to play with friends, a local co-op is available; Player Two will control Kirby's pal Bandana waddle Dee.

Shinya Kumazaki is the long-serving series director.

Nintendo will follow Kirby's lead with Advance Wars 1+2 : Re-Boot Camp. This is a remastered collection from Advance Wars 2 and Advance Wars 2 : Black Hole Rising. The military-themed strategy game will be available for Switch with a brand new art style, animated character portraits, and a completely new art style. The game features two campaigns as well as a Versus Mode for up to four players.

WayForward is developing Re-Boot CampShantaeIt will be published by Nintendo. Nintendo originally scheduled Re-Boot Camp for December 2021 but delayed it to 2022 to give the team “a little more time for fine tuning.”

We were awarded Advance WarsAnd Advance Wars 2They were both 9.9 and 9.9 respectively when they were released for Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo revealed Nintendo Switch Sports at its latest Direct. This is a follow up to its previous Direct. This is a very popular productPack-in games from two generations ago Wii Sports.

Nintendo Switch SportsFeatures tennis, bowling and chambara (swordplay), as well as badminton and volleyball. As an update, golf will be available as a free download later in the year. The sequel will be 16 years later than the original, and players will again have the option to use their Mii avatars for playable characters.

It’s a bit surprising it took Nintendo so long to create this sequel, though with the Switch install base now over 100 million, perhaps there's no better time for Nintendo to release a game with such wide-reaching potential.

Mario Strikers: Battle League

The next Mushroom Kingdom sport game is Mario Strikers: Battle LeagueDue out June 10, 2009.

Battle League is a 5v5 soccer-like game that largely ignores the rules of the sport: Players can throw, kick, and tackle their way to scoring goals, while also using character-specific special shots and Mario Kart-esque items like shells and bananas — all on a field enclosed by an electric fence.

You can change the four types of gear to alter character stats and appearances: head, arms and body, legs, and legs. Battle League supports local co-op for 8 players, and also offers an online club mode for up to 20 people.

In the trailer, Mario, Luigi (with Peach), Yoshi, Bowser and Toad are among the characters seen. Rosalina is also included.

The last Mario soccer game, Mario Strikers ChargedThe movie, ‘The Godfather' was released in 2007.

Three Hopes for Fire Emblem Warriors

The next Mousu/Warriors game from Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force studio is Three Hopes for Fire Emblem Warriors. Three Hopes will see players take on waves and waves of enemies to become characters. Fire Emblem: Three HomesThe series' past games, including Byleth (Marth), Chrom, Xander and Corrin.

The first Fire Emblem Warriors2017 release. Recently, Nintendo partnered with Koei Tecmo to create a Warriors game within the Zelda universe. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Splatoon 3

Nintendo’s ink-shooter returns in Summer 2022 with Splatoon 3. Splatoon 3 is set in the desert area of Splatlands and features both single-player as well multiplayer game types. It also includes the latest version of the 4v4 Turf War mode.

Return of the Mammalians (single-player campaign) pits Agent 3 against the Octarian army. The campaign focuses on the recovery of mammals to the world of Platon. Wave-based coop mode Salmon RunWe will be back.

We were awarded Splatoon 2An 8.3 in 2017, when it was first released.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The next installment in Nintendo’s Xenoblade Chronicles JRPG series will be released in September.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is set in an all-new world, though it will be connected to the series’ previous games. You’ll play as Noah and Mio “amid turmoil between the hostile nations of Keves and Agnus. Six characters hailing from those nations will take part in a grand tale with ‘life' as its central theme,” reads the official description.

Tetsuya Takahashi, the executive director of the previous Xenoblade Chronicles game, is again in charge of Chronicles 3. While he’s yet to reveal much about the project, the director said fans can scour the debut trailer to find some hidden clues.

The series’ last mainline game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2The, which came to Switch in 2017, Remastered version of the original Xenoblade ChroniclesIn 2020, it was released in a more recent release.

Bayonetta 3

Sega may be the owner of the Bayonetta trademark but Nintendo is funding Bayonetta 3 and publishing it. Therefore, the game is considered one of its own. When it is released in 2022, it will only be available for Switch.

Bayonetta 3, was revealed at The Game Awards 2017, with a teaser trailer. PlatinumGames, developer of the game, remained silent on the subject until it was finally revealed at a Nintendo Direct last Sept. Finally, we got a glimpse at Bayonetta’s new moves, mechanics and enemies in the trailer. The trailer ended with a 2022 release window, and a shot showing someone who looks awfully like Vergil in Devil May Cry.

Hideki Kamiya (executive director) told IGN Bayonetta 3 in February that the game will be featuring “new types of gameplay” and was not being restricted by Nintendo.

The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild 2

The Legend of Zelda 2: Breath of the Wild is the most anticipated game regardless of publisher. The sequel to IGN’s Best Game of All TimeA was unveiled at E3 2019, with a TrailerThat set a significantly darker tone than the original 2017 version.

Breath of the Wild 2 was a secret for two years by Nintendo. Then, at E3 2021, Nintendo debuted the game’s Second trailerThis video shows Link moving through Hyrule, using both old and new techniques. At one point, Link wields a handheld flamethrower; at another, he teleports vertically through stone, hinting at the sequel’s expanded traversal mechanics. The trailer ends abruptly with a shot of Hyrule Castle suspended from mid-air.

The sequel will, of course, be a single-player adventure, though when asked, Nintendo wouldn’t deny the possibility of Co-op at Breath of Wild 2. It’s being directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of many past Zelda games including the first Breath of the Wild.

A title official has not yet been revealed. Nintendo said it’s Keep quiet about the name for good reason: “Zelda names are kind of important. Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”

Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope

Revealed at E3 2021, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is Ubisoft and Nintendo’s follow-up to 2017’s Kingdom Battle. Sparks of Hope, a single-player adventure, sends Mario and his friends into outer space to face Cursa, a new evil.

While sharing a name and the foundation of strategy gameplay, Ubisoft says Sparks of Hope is more of a “spiritual sequel” to Kingdom Battle: “We never designed it as a sequel, but a new take on the tactical genre,” game director Davide Soliani told IGN. You may be familiar with Soliani's endearing personality E3 2017: appearanceHe also directed the original game.

This time around, levels aren’t linear; planets instead are open locations you can explore, each with their own stories and characters. Ubisoft has also altered gameplay in a significant way, doing away with Kingdom Battle’s grid system in favor of “a focus on fluidity and the action offered by the possibility to move the heroes in real-time.”

Sparks of Hope includes nine playable characters including Mario, Luigi (Peach), Rabbid Luigi(Rabbid Luigi), Rabbid Peach (Rabbid Rosalina) and many more.

Detective Pikachu 2

Switch is currently developing a sequel to Detective Pikachu, the 2018 3DS title.

Detective Pikachu 2, will bring closure to the cliffhanger ending in the first game. Nintendo says the sequel will have “a different take on the ending than what you saw in theaters,” referring to the Ryan Reynolds-voiced Detective Pikachu movie.

We called the first Detective Pikachu game “a bold take on the iconic Pokemon, which succeeds thanks to Pika Prompts that build Pikachu beyond detective stereotypes.”

Metroid Prime 4

In 2017, Nintendo AnnouncementMetroid Prime 4 was reportedly in the midst of construction. Bandai Namco Studios Singapore. For Metroid fans who hadn't seen a new Prime since 2007, it was a day to celebrate.

Nintendo decided to scrap the game in 2019, and instead announced that development would resume at Retro StudiosNintendo's studio responsible for the original Metroid Prime Trilogy. After Nintendo determined that Metro Prime 4's first version wasn't up to its standards, the decision was taken.

Retro's long-time series producer Kensuke Tanabe continues to oversee the project. He’s joined by former DICE art director Jhony LjungstedtRetro in 2020 hired, who is the same person as,

Outside of a logo, we’ve yet to see anything official from Nintendo. The last update came during E3 2021, when the company said it was still “working hard” on Metroid Prime 4.

The series’ latest, Metroid DreadThe, which was released in 2021. We awarded it a 9 and said it “has just enough clever innovation to balance its familiarity.”

Pikmin 4

Shigeru Mishamoto confirmed Pikmin 4, Development back in 2015, saying at the time the game was “actually very close to completion.” However, in the six-plus years since, Nintendo has yet to reveal anything official related to Pikmin 4.

Miyamoto reaffirmed development in the following year. Permanent, though he noted it had fallen down Nintendo’s list of priorities. At E3 2017, Miyamoto stated that Pikmin 4 was the next update.Moving forward.”

The series’ most recent mainline game, Pikmin 3, was released for Wii U in 2013. Pikmin 3 DeluxeSwitch launched ”, which brings new content and quality-of life improvements to its users, in 2020.

Nintendo DLC

Nintendo currently has two noteworthy DLCs in development. One for Mario Kart 8 DeluxeMetroid Dread and one for Metroid Dread.

Mario Kart DLC: Pass for the Booster Course. You will find 48 remade tracks from the past, which will be released in six waves at $25 USD each. The first wave will be released on March 18, with Nintendo planning to release all 48 tracks by the end of 2023 — at which point the game will feature over half of All Mario Kart tracks made.

Metroid Fear is now offering a free boss rush mod in April. As the name suggests, the mode will have you “battling bosses continuously, one at a time.”
