Ex-StarCraft & Warcraft Devs Fund $25 Million for Unreal Engine 5 RTS

Frost Giant Studios is a debut developer that was founded by former Blizzard employees. It has raised $25 Million to help create Unreal Engine 5, a new real-time strategy game.

Frost Giant – which was founded by Tom Morten (production director on StarCraft 2) and Tim Campbell (lead campaign designer on WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne) – was founded in 2020 with the goal of creating an “epic” real-time strategy game. It received $25 million in funding from Riot Games and Kakao Games (PUBG), as well as other Korean publishers.

Frost Giant has raised $34.7 Million for its first project. The game will be officially announced later in the year.

IGN spoke with Tim Morten, CEO of Frost Giant. He explained how the money would be used in a variety of ways. First, Frost Giant will be able to make the RTS it’s always wanted.

He explained that funding “gives us the runway we need in order to ship the game we have in mind.” “As you know, creative vision isn’t always a straight line, so the ideas we have today may morph based on what we feel would make for the best player experience. For us, this funding is a testament that the appetite for RTS remains strong in the global gaming community, and we are encouraged to have leading companies like Kakao Gaming believe in what we’re building and supporting our journey.”

Other benefits for the game include turning the 30-person team into 50 people, helping fund a new HQ to house them all, as well as adding extra technology to boost the game’s looks and performance – which is being built in the impressive Unreal Engine 5. Morten stated that they are always exploring new technologies to provide a cutting-edge RTS gaming experience. “We are exploring and testing new tools for animation, visual effects and artificial intelligence. We’re also exploring innovative ways to fully integrate esports within our game and to support our future player community.”

The Best Strategy Games of 2020

As for what that game will be, Frost Giant is staying a little more tight-lipped – although we’ve gotten some clues. As you would expect, the team draws from its extensive experience in the genre having produced some of the most popular RTS games ever made. But Morten insists that this does not mean that the new project will be a throwback.

He says, “We are determined to create the best RTS game that exists. One that new and existing players will love to play from day one.” “The Frost Giant Team is blessed to have learned from StarCraft and Warcraft experiences. These experiences offer clear directions for exploration. We also want to make RTS more friendly to players who have been intimidated by it in the past. While still providing world-class esports modes, we are also trying to make RTS more user-friendly.

“We believe we can do it. We love the genre and its people so much that we are dedicated to our mission.” We hope that everyone who loves RTS will be as excited as we are to share our plans with players when we unveil the game to them later in the year.

The game’s latest press release states that it will be supporting co-op and entertaining to watch as an Esport. Mapmakers are also encouraged to join the game.
