The NPD Group announced that the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the United States in January 2022.

According to the latest data from the analyst group, the PS5 was the most popular hardware platform in January. This includes both dollars and units.

The Xbox Series X/S came in second place in both categories. However, overall hardware sales reached $390 million for the second-highest January ever, an increase of 22% over January 2021.

The Best PS5 Games

January 2009 was the year with the highest number of sales, as the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were only a few years old.

Despite the massive hardware sales in January, spending on accessories, content and hardware for games fell by 2% when compared to January 20,21.

Software sales saw Pokémon Legends: Arceus take the top spot, followed by Call of Duty: Vanguard, Monster Hunter: Rise, Madden NFL 22, and God of War in fifth place.

Steam releases caused huge spikes in sales for Monster Hunter 2: Rise and God of War. They were 94th and146th most popular games respectively last month.

As of February 2, the PS5 officially outsold Nintendo Wii U, as it sold 17.3 million units during the holiday period.

It also enjoyed a phenomenal 2021, surpassing the PS4’s first fiscal year. This broke the 33-month streak of the Nintendo Switch at the top in US hardware sales. The console was also the fastest-selling U.S. console in unit and dollar sales.
