Sony expects to sell fewer PlayStation 5 units this year than originally forecast. Because of ongoing component shortages, Sony has had to reduce its forecasts by millions.
Sony had previously expected to sell more than 14.8 million PS5s by March 2022 – a number that would have seen the console exceed PS4’s on sales in its second financial year on the market. The company has now stopped expecting that it would be able reach this level of supply and forecasts 11.5million sales for the year.
“Unfortunately,” said CFO Hiroki Totoki in a Q3 earnings call, “due to limitations on the supply of components – especially semiconductiors – and an increase in delivery times resulting from the disruption of the global distribution supply chain, we have revised our FY21 unit sales forecast for PS5 hardware to 11.5 million units.”
Totoki said that the supply restrictions will likely continue. “Limitations to the supply components are expected to continue going ahead, but we continue to exert every effort in order to meet strong demand for PS5.”
In an earnings call Q&A, Totoki explained that the company hopes to be able to “catch up” from the short-term impact of these shortages. He added, “Afterwards,[We are working closely with] our partner companies supplying us with components – collaborating, negotiating and working with them closely. We hope to make that happen. However, we must be careful about how it is done. [PS5]I believe it is safe to say that supply disruptions will continue in the component market globally because of distribution problems. We don’t know what the exact demand will be next year.
Totoki said that he believes it’s important for the company, despite any issues, to keep its sales targets high in the future.
PS5 still has great success, despite lower-than-expected sales in this financial period. Sony reports that PS5 has sold 17.3 millions PS5s since December 3, 2021. Although it has not been able to keep track, PS5 sold more PS4s than PS5 in its first fiscal year and was the fastest-selling console in US history.
