Britt Reid, former assistant coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, pleads guilty to crash

KANSAS City, Mo. — Former Kansas City Chiefs Britt Reid, assistant coach of the football team, pleaded guilty Monday in connection to felony DUI resulting from serious physical injury. The 2021 crash in which his pickup truck hit two other cars on an interstate access ramp resulted in Britt Reid injuring a 5-year old girl.

Reid, the 37-year old son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was set to face trial on Sept. 26. Although he had been sentenced to up to seven year imprisonment, the plea agreement means that he could be sentenced to probation or four years prison. He entered his plea in Jackson County Circuit Court, Kansas City. Oct. 28 is the date for sentencing.

Investigators found Britt Reid intoxicated driving at 84 mph (135 km/h) when his Dodge truck struck the cars on the ramp to Interstate 435, near Arrowhead Stadium, on February 4, 2021.

Ariel Young was a passenger in one of the vehicles and sustained a traumatic head injury. Reid was among six people who were also injured in the accident.

Reid confessed Monday to having been drunk on the night of his crash.

Reid stated, “I really regret what my actions were.” “I made a huge mistake. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to my family. I was not trying to harm anyone.”

Tom Pardo, an Ariel family attorney, stated that they were against the plea deal.

Pardo stated that the five victims of this crime were outraged. “The prosecuting attorney does not seek the maximum sentence permitted by law. The defendant is a previous offender who caused a 5-year old girl to go into a coma and severely injured three others.

According to court records, a Kansas City officer who arrived on the spot of the crash said that he could smell alcohol and that Reid had bloodshot eyes. Police reported that Reid had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.113 at the time of the crash. The legal limit for Reid is 0.08.

A dead battery had caused the first vehicle to stop, and Ariel’s mother had brought the second one.

A confidential agreement was reached by the Chiefs with Ariel’s family in November. It covered her ongoing medical care and other expenses.

After the accident, Reid had to have emergency surgery for a groin injury. After Reid’s contract expired, the Chiefs placed Reid in administrative leave.

Reid isn’t the first to face legal issues. He graduated in 2009 from a Pennsylvania drug treatment program after several encounters with law enforcement. His father was the coach. Philadelphia Eagles At the time.

Britt Reid was the older brother of Garrett Reid, who served a two-year sentence at a Pennsylvania state drug rehabilitation program. He had been arrested on drug-related charges. Garrett Reid was later found dead at Lehigh University in August 2012. He was working at the Eagles training camp. He died from an accidental heroin overdose, according to the coroner.
