Rob Baxter says Dafydd Jeffers: Youngster from Wales could become future Exeter captain

Exeter was led for the first time by Dafydd Jerkins earlier this month

Rob Baxter, the club’s director rugby, says that Dafydd Jenkins, a newly-capped Wales lock has the potential to be Exeter’s long-term captain.

Jenkins was the Chiefs’ first captain in the Premiership win over London Irish This month, earlier.

Baxter said that he believes he is the man who could possibly hold the job for a longer period of time in the future.

Since his debut in Exeter’s 2021 summer, Jenkins has been a part of the team 14 times.

Baxter stated that Jenkins will decide how far he can take his career.

“The thing that makes him stand out is his hard work, his diligence, and professionalism. He is also driven to win and succeed. He is a strong character to lead others and be a captain.

“I made him captain after we assembled the squad, and yes, we had more experienced players.”

Jenkins was joined by Christ Tshiunza, a fellow Welsh forward, to play for Wales in this autumn’s next generation of promising young players at Exeter.

Baxter said, “It justifies all the hard work that was put into recruitment that other people see the quality they are playing at as well.”

“We support young players at an appropriate level. When we do recruit anyone, the one thing I am happy to have some confidence is saying don’t look around the squad to see where other good players are. Because if we believe you’re playing better than any other player, we’ll pick you regardless of whether or not you’re here.

“I believe that policy has served us well, it’s kept us well with Christ, and it’s also held us well together with Daff.

“We have always told them that if you’re the right man, we’ll pick your’. I’ve also said the exact same thing to the Wasps young lads who joined us recently.”
