Toronto Maple Leafs announce Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, as their Hockey Hall of Famer and assistant general manager

Dr. Hayley Winninger, Hockey Hall of Famer, and one of most decorated women’s hockey players of history, has been promoted from assistant general manager to the NHL Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wickenheiser’s focus will be player and player development. Wickenheiser joined the Leafs in August 2018 as an assistant director of player developmental. He was promoted to senior director in 2021. Wickenheiser is a six-time Olympian, four-time gold medalist for women’s hockey ice hockey. He graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary (in 2021).

Wickenheiser is one of the latest women to be hired as assistant general manager in the NHL. She joins Emilie castonguay with the NHL and Cammigranato with the NHL. Vancouver Canucks Meghan Hunter and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Darryl Metcalf, Ryan Hardy were promoted to assistant general managers positions by the Leafs. Metcalf was elevated to the position of assistant general manager, hockey research and development. Metcalf is currently in his ninth season as a Maple Leafs assistant general manager for hockey research and development. Before the Leafs hired him to their new analytics department, he was the founder and creator of Extra Skater, a hockey analytics website.

Hardy, who had served as the USHL’s Chicago Steel’s general manager for three years, was appointed the team’s senior direct of minor league operations in 2021. They are joined by Brandon Pridham (current Maple Leafs assistant general manager) under Kyle Dubas.
