Chicago Blackhawks take a step ‘outside’ of hockey. Interview with Jeff Greenberg, Chicago Cubs executive

CHICAGO — Jeff Greenberg is the Chicago Cubs assistant general Manager. He interviewed with NHL officials. Chicago Blackhawksfor their GM position, and was the first person to apply from outside of professional hockey.

On Monday, the Blackhawks confirmed that they had interviewed for the position. Rocky Wirtz’s son and CEO Danny Wirtz promised last month, that the process would include candidates both inside and outside the game.

In 2020, Greenberg assumed his current role as Cubs’ operations intern. Greenberg joined the Cubs in 2012 as an intern in baseball operations. He was also the Cubs’ director for pro scouting, baseball operations.

Greenberg holds degrees from Columbia Law School as well as the University of Pennsylvania. Greenberg also interned at Major League Baseball’s Labor Relations Department.

The Blackhawks have also interviewed Kyle Davidson, interim GM. Carolina HurricanesEric Tulsky is an ex-forward in the NHL and assistant GM. Scott MellanbyPeter Chiarelli, an NHL veteran, was the ideal choice for this role.

Former Blackhawks forwards Eddie Olczyk, Marian Hossa Patrick Sharpthey are helping the team to find a GM.

Davidson was elevated to the interim job after longtime general manager Stan Bowman resigned in October in the wake of a report by an outside law firm, Jenner & Block, that found the organization mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010.

This report was also responsible for Al MacIsaac’s departure, another Chicago hockey executive. The NHL also fined the team $2,000,000 for “the organization’s inept internal procedures and insufficient, untimely response.”

After an investigation into allegations regarding sexual harassment, the Blackhawks made it clear to ESPN that they had fired their longtime head trainer for AHL affiliate.

ESPN reached the Blackhawks on Sunday to confirm that D.J. was Rockford IceHogs’ chief athletic trainer. Jones was terminated from his employment in November. Sources claim that the individual was part of the team’s Ice Crew. The allegations stemmed from an incident that occurred many years ago.

The person came forward with the allegations a day after Jenner & Block’s report on the Blackhawks was released.
